BEING THE TRANSFER STUDENT had its perks, but it had its... moments. the main thing you disliked about the whole process is the sorting ceremonies. while ilvermorny had quite the basic sorting, hogwarts had you stand in front of the whole school and faculty. you could see it not being that bad if maybe you had a whole group of first years with you, but you had to transfer mid-year as your family moved. so, there you stood, alone in the middle of this grand... hall? four huge tables with hundreds of students sat in front of you as you were lead in by professor mcgonagall.
there were four colors. you didn't know which houses were which, but walked along the middle of the hall with semi-confidence. the whispers were inevitable, but some students gave you welcoming smiles (particularly the older ones) making you feel a little better. the professors and headmaster were sat at the front of the room and your eyes locked with headmaster dumbledore, who gave you a small smile.
"please sit on the stool dear, and the hat will assign you a house," professor mcgonagall whispered kindly and you did exactly that, sitting on the rickety old stool. she brought out a huge hat that had a... face? you couldn't help but smile as it was placed on your head and began talking.
"hmmm, ilvermorny. thunderbird house hm? good strength, soulful voice, ooh. compassion. you would be good in hufflepuff... but hmm. courage and adventure and quite the interesting childhood ms. l/n. calming but a troublemaker. it'll be..." the hat trailed, his voice growing louder as the students waited on the edges of their seats in excitement. you felt your cheeks flush as the tense atmosphere got to you.
"GRYFFINDOR!" the hat boomed and you felt a grin appear on your face as the said table stood up to cheer for you. the rest clapped and you happily made your way off the stool and down to the maroon-ish table. the students all greeted you with smiles and congratulations as you sat down beside three students around your age.
"'ello, i'm ron!" a redhead greeted and you couldn't help your smile at his heavy accent. you extended your hand and shook it with his, turning to the girl beside him.
"hermione. it's lovely to meet you," she had curly brown hair and wide brown eyes that you thought were pretty. you nodded and turned to the last boy, the one beside you. he had fluffy black hair, blue eyes, and cute circular classes. you were quick to notice the scar upon his head and your eyes widened a fraction.
"i'm-"
"harry potter," you spoke for the first time and everyone around you turned to look at you oddly. you felt embarrassed and you tilted your head slightly. perhaps it was odd to introduce someone for themself, so you continued on.
"i'm y/n." the three exchanged looks then looked back at you.
"your accent is odd," ron said and you laughed. that's why they were so odd. you were from the [states OR canada] and they did have fairly different accents than the kids at hogwarts did. at your laugh ron flushed and hermione wacked the back of his head.
"sorry 'bout him y/n." she apologized and gave you a smile which you returned. harry had yet to say anything else, and just looked at you occasionally. you felt bad for saying anything. it would be difficult to deal with almost everyone knowing who you are all the time.
"it's alright." harry finally looked up at hermione's furious glare and turned to you, making you feel less awkward. he sparked conversation with you about the u.s, and you three had a great chat about the two schools as you explained what your old school was like, and they spoke about hogwarts. you felt comfortable with the gryffindor students, and by the end of dinner, you felt like they were close friends. harry was actually nice and down to earth, and ron was 'bloody' (as he would say) hilarious. hermione lead you to the dorms, showed you how to get in, and you two stayed up till morning talking about everything and anything.
