YOU LIKED BEING ANNOYING. not only that, you loved annoying stanley. it was just too easy to get under his skin, and you did. oh boy, you did. but if he wasn't going to pick up on the signals you'd been giving him since the sixth grade, you decided you would annoy him until he would tell you how he really felt. maybe he actually hated your guts, and was too scared to tell you. maybe he just liked you as a friend. you didn't really care, but wanted to know.
"stanley-manly," you whisper-yelled, making him snap his eyes in your direction, narrowed in a glare. he raised his binoculars back up, ignoring you as you grinned cheekily, peeking at him from behind the top of his bird book. he was scouting for some weird red bird today, and was extremely concentrated. you thought it was extra cute, so as he searched around for the bird, you sketched a picture of him on that page. that was your routine.
at first he was shocked and upset that there was a drawing on his pristine book, but he didn't erase it. even though they drove his ocd mad, he couldn't force himself to get rid of something you worked so hard on. they were good drawings too, mostly of him, but sometimes trees, or the sun. each drawing was from a different day, on the page of whatever bird they were scouting for.
you had an odd habit. your tongue poked out of your mouth when you were sketching. stanley always noticed it, and he thought your concentration face was cute too. he stared at you when you were distracted, not entirely meaning to.. but it just happened. he didnt know why, and always tried not to succumb to the odd feelings. every time he was around you, his heart beat just a little faster, and he was nervous, but... a good kind of nervous.
he liked it.
"stanley uris, june 15th..." you whispered quietly, signing and dating the small drawing. you smiled, taking a good look at your work then looked up to compare. but instead of staring at a bird-watching stan, you found him already looking at you, an eyebrow raised and a small smile on his face.
it was a very abnormal thing for the curly haired boy. he was always frowning, never really in his own mind. you always told him he looked better with a smile on his face, but that just made him stare at you blankly. he was sassy, and a little bit of a jerk, but you knew he cared somewhere in his body.
"well damn. you should've posed like that!" you giggled, tilting your head as you leaned back against the mossy log you sat by. he shook his head, the smile tugging at the corners of his lips again, and he looked away, once again raising his binoculars.
"why so quiet?" you pestered, closing his book gently. of course you were always careful with it, since it was one of his most prized possessions. plus you weren't a total asshole, unlike some people. shifting closer to the quiet boy, you sat beside him timidly. stanley showed no real opinion to the fact, and just handed you the binoculars.
"look there," he mumbled, his hand extended. he gave you a look when you didn't move to take them, and you shrugged, grabbing them carefully to look where he pointed. at first you didn't see anything, but a pop of red and blue caught your attention. a small bird, pretty and colorful, sat on a branch, eating a berry. it was calm.
"cute." you commented, handing them back to him. his hand brushed against yours, making you tense up slightly. something felt different. out of the many times you had held his hand, being; dragging him along with you at your pace when he walked too slow, or when henry bowers advanced on you and you grabbed his hand in fright, to even tracing patterns on his palm in boredom as you stared up at the cloudy sky, none felt like they did now. you hesitantly looked up, meeting his conflicted eyes.
without a word, he leant down toward you, and your eyes widened. you knew exactly where it was going, and a blush spread across your cheeks like wildfire. finally, after literally almost two years of waiting, he decided to make a move. his lips pressed against yours softly, and you were sure you felt your heart jump in excitement, a warmth spreading through your whole body. it was short and sweet, a perfect first kiss, and when he pulled away, you took a shaky breath.
