The next afternoon, Amber comes and picks me up with an irritated look on her face. It's Saturday and it's two in the afternoon, so I wonder what she could be grumpy about.
“Hey,” I greet her, sliding into the passenger seat. “The house is really nice, by the way.”
“Thanks,” she replies, and then turns to look at me with both her eyebrows raised. “What. Happened?”
I blush under her scrutiny, and then she shrieks loudly. “I knew it! I knew it. Did you, or did you not, sleep with You-Know-Who?”
“Possibly,” I mumble under my breath, and then sigh and close my eyes as she remains quiet for a second before exploding.
“Teresa Penelope Clarkson! Oh my good Lord, you did not do the one thing you shouldn't have done!” I peek out from under my lashes to see her narrowing her eyes at me. “Okay, first of all, where? Second of all, how did that even happen? I thought you would just be in that house for an hour, maximum, not spend all night and into the afternoon there! Jesus Christ, how many times did you go at it? You better tell me everything down to the color of this man's underwear, Teresa!”
I hastily explain the details of yesterday with a lot of detail, but fail to recall the color of Zack's underwear. But I highly doubt that she was serious about that.
“But it's not like I went there thinking any of that would happen,” I say. “I didn't think, 'oh, wow, this is a great opportunity!' I don't want to lead him into thinking that this means things are...are okay between us. Because they're not okay, they're still shaky, and I want them to be okay, but they're not yet. And sleeping with him didn't help that.”
“I hear what you're saying,” Amber replies, peeking in the side mirror to check her hair as we wait at a red light. “And I get you didn't have those intentions, Isa, I really do. As your friend, I was just a wee bit overexcited when I saw you. But I think that if you feel like that, then you and Zack need to have a conversation about where your relationship is going next.”
I nod at her sound advice. “Yeah, you're right. I should talk to him. And speaking of talking...have you and Adrian talked?”
She tenses slightly, but I catch it anyway. “Yeah. I guess.”
“Wow, that was really specific,” I say sarcastically. “If you were any more specific, I'd have to say it was too much information.”
Amber rolls her big eyes. “Okay, okay, you're right. We've been talking a bit since about two weeks ago, and he knows that it's his kid. And I'm going to have the baby. His baby. Our baby. My baby. I don't know.”
“Have you talked about your relationship at all?”
“He said he'd like to be friends. We haven't really figured out the whole deal with who's going to take care of the baby, and when, and what the schedule will be, but we have two and a half months to figure it out, right?”
“Yeah,” I say, and then whistle under my breath. “Wow. I can't believe you're gonna be a mom.”
“Me neither,” Amber replies, and we both chuckle. “Just don't get pregnant until you're married, Isa.”
“I'll try not to,” I answer. “Have you thought about names?”
“I really want a girl, and I'm thinking Samantha if the baby is a girl,” she says, merging lanes. “But if it's a boy, I haven't really given much thought to the name.”
