I freeze in my exact spot. There's something wrong - something very, very wrong. There's no power in the house, and the only light in the room is from the gentle light in the fireplace. At the moment, however, it doesn't seem very gentle. It gives off an eerie light, causing everything to have menacing, unfriendly shadows.

It's the shadows that let me know something's wrong. My werewolf abilities allow me to see perfectly, so when I see a shadow ripple behind the couch, I dive for the floor the second I notice it. Not a second too soon, either, because I hear the whizzing of a crossbow. It soars straight through the spot I was just standing in, and it crashes through the window that I had my back to.

I stay where I am on the floor, feeling dizzy with fear. Someone curses quietly from the other side of the couch, and my heart threatens to beat out of my chest.

But I can't afford to be this afraid. I have to protect the others in this house - but thankfully, I am not alone. Matt is in the house, along with several other people. There's always people here, whether they need a place to stay, or to help guard the Alpha and his Luna.

I reach out through the pack link, the one that has been there since childhood, and explain what's going on. Several people curse through my head, and begin talking at once. I'm still laying on the floor, focusing on what they're saying.

That's what causes someone to be able to sneak up and kick me in the side of my stomach. The breath gets knocked out of me, and the next thing I know, I'm kicked again before I can recover.

That's going to form a bruise, I think to myself. Ouch. I roll out of the way of the next one, under the couch. My attacker looks around wildly for a second, and then he smirks, looking right down at me. My breath catches in my throat - is he going to try and kidnap me? Rape me? Cut up my body into a million pieces?

A jolt goes through me. That scent... It's familiar. I can't quite place it, but it triggers something in my memory.

Javier. That's what he smells like - people of a pack often have faint traces of their Alpha, and since they're rogues, Javier is their Alpha at the moment. I squeak a little as the guy's foot finds my hip, and kicks hard.

I feel something crack, and I have to squeeze my nails into my palm to keep from crying out with pain. I start breathing shallowly, half from the pain in my hip and half from terror. What if he just keeps kicking?

"Come out, come out, little Luna," he whispers, grinning evily. "I can kick much harder than that."

I have to make a decision. Either lie here as Javier's man kicks my hip to pieces, or try to get out. Trying to stomach my fear, I make my move.

When the foot comes flying at me again, I grab it and twist, hard. The guy curses in Spanish, and I grin with the satisfaction of momentarily disabling him. I've probably twisted his ankle, but it's enough. I roll out to the other side of the couch and toward the broken window, and I keep running until I'm about to jump through it. Freedom!
