I try not to gulp at the aura of power emanating off of Zack. He's signaled over Francine and while he's waiting for a plate of fries, I've ordered another milkshake just for the sake of something to do.

When the fries come, he offers me one and I awkwardly take it, mumbling a thank you while I try to avert his gaze.

I hear him sigh and without warning he cups my chin and forces it up, which causes my green eyes to finally meet his brown ones.

Eyes are a curious thing. Everyone has different ones, but I can't really explain his eyes and manage to capture the beauty. They're a beautiful, milky brown, with gold flecks. The shade is more hazel towards the center while the outer edges are more of a milk chocolate color.

He blinks, and my trance is broken. However, he is still staring at me.

Is there something on my face? I think to myself. Or maybe in my teeth? Oh my gosh, why is he still looking at me? What if some weird zit popped up in the last hour that I'm unaware of? Or maybe -

Zack clears his throat, snapping me back into reality. I blush a bit and look down, taking a second to stare at myself in the reflective surface of the table. Thank God, there isn't a mysterious zit on my face like I thought. Before he has the chance to speak, I run my tongue over my teeth to make sure nothing is in them, because that would be really embarassing..

"Why did you hit me earlier?" he asks. I look up to the sound of his voice to see that he has an eyebrow cocked.

"Why did you kiss me earlier?" I counter, leaning back and crossing my arms, somehow finding confidence I didn't even know I possessed. He snorts.

"We're mates," he says in a duh tone. "I'm supposed to kiss you."

I roll my eyes dramatically. "Look, Alpha, I don't know what kind of girls you were hanging around, but I'm not the type of person you can kiss the second you see me."

Zack seems slightly taken aback by my sarcastic attitude, but I'm not about to change for some guy I barely know - mate or not.

"Why are you being so mean?" he asks, eyes narrowing.

"Why, did you expect me to just fall at your feet since we're mates?" I give him a dubious look.

"Well..no, but I didn't expect you to be so..." Zack waves his hands around in the air, searching for a word. "Snarky."

"Excuse me?" I question, surprised he even said that. "I can act any damn way I want to, and there's no law saying I can't be snarky towards you, mate or not. So if you'll excuse me, I'm leaving."

I snatch my milkshake off the table - thank god it's in a to-go cup - and march out of Francine's without giving him a glance back. I feel his eyes burning a hole into my retreating back, so I sashay my hips a bit as I make my exit.

It's been a couple hours since the incident at Francine's, and I haven't seen Zack around at all. I guess he's either avoiding me or doing Alpha things, but it's around ten thirty so I wouldn't be surprised if he thought I was sleeping.
