▪︎▪︎▪︎▪︎▪︎▪︎▪︎▪︎▪︎▪︎▪︎▪︎▪︎▪︎▪︎There are some nights just not worth sleeping through.
I learnt this on this perfect night, running down the hallways of the near empty Lotus Manor, Chan-Yeol running after me, our presence disturbing sleeping shadows and settling dust.
The lights were off but the moon outside lit up the walls, telling us where to go. We'd drank a little too much wine, our heads spinning as the only thing we wanted to do was laugh. So, we kept running, laughing, yelling, kissing, dancing. I couldn't remember the last time I'd felt so free; I felt like there was no air in my lungs, but I was floating.
He never let go of my hand, not once. His hand was warm in mine as it twirled me round in circles every time I slowed down, pulling me into him as close as our bodies would allow. The sweet whispers of I love you's left his lips as we became a mess of stolen kisses, straying hands and eager touches. By the time we made it back to the bedroom, we'd already lost half our clothes.
Blissful satisfaction. The push and pull, gentle and rough, the shared laughs and shy giggles, the confusion and hesitation, the concern. We made it through together. After the bedroom, came the bathroom, then the loveseat and then, back to the bed.
As I lay there, half bare, my legs tangled with the ruffled sheets, my hair messy and splayed out over Chan-Yeol's arm that I used as a pillow, his fingers tracing patterns on my hip, I realised I wouldn't want to be anywhere else.
I didn't feel like there was anything dark looming over me and I let my guard drop; even the looming war ahead of us felt small. I felt like I could breathe easily because I was here: in this house, in this room, with this man. I felt like I was holding the world in my hands.
"What are you thinking about so intently? You're going to make a hole in the ceiling with your eyes," Chan-Yeol whispered, his voice muffled by his lips pressing into my shoulder.
I turned my head, blinking slowly, "You. Me. Life... everything at once."
A lazy smile made its way to his lips, "Me? What kind of thoughts are you having ab—"
He faltered, a soft gasp leaving the back of his throat as I slowly raised my hand and traced his bottom lip with my index finger, "Why are you so perfect?"
Even in the dark I could see his cheeks flush, and he took a hold of my hand, kissing my palm before placing it against his cheek, "I've been dying to ask you the same thing."
I smiled, shifting so I was laying on my side, my hand more comfortably caressing his cheek.
He leaned forward, burying his face in my neck, "I never want this night to end. Do you think that's possible to do?"
I let out a short laugh, running my fingers through his hair, humming softly in his ear as his grip around me tightened, "Maybe."
His nose tickled my ear, his chin tucking my head under his, a very soft mumble escaping his mouth, "Don't leave me."
Maybe I misheard. Maybe not, but I chose to answer accordingly, "I won't."
We fell asleep like that; drowning in each other's touch, too hot but unwilling to break away from one another, holding on so tight nothing could get between us.
