Kim Ma-Ra's Pov.
▪︎▪︎▪︎▪︎▪︎▪︎▪︎▪︎▪︎▪︎▪︎▪︎▪︎▪︎▪︎▪︎▪︎▪︎▪︎"She hid herself well all these years. How like you to undo all her hard work."
As far as I was concerned, I never had a father. There was a man in our house ten years ago, but he was no father; he was a menace.
I recall every slap, every harsh lecture and rebuke, every threat and then the going through with it. He was the worst human being in existence with a beautiful mask painted over his face.
When my mother was killed by him, all anyone had to say was "oh, but it couldn't have been Mr Kim, he's so friendly, he volunteers at the local orphanage, he's a member of the charity committee for our neighbourhood, he's a good man."
He put on an incredible act when they burned the remains of her body, but when the people left and the attention waned, he flitted back to being a monster-chasing us all to the ends of the Earth, cruel smiles and cold eyes permanently engraved into our memories.
"Don't touch her." I spat at him over the line, my hands clenched tightly. I had more to say. The order "go fuck yourself" currently felt appropriate but then again, he could be anywhere. He could be right next to Yeo-Reom for all I knew. It was better to play his game until his plan became bare and obvious.
"I don't need to touch her to kill her. The last link will soon be no more and by the looks of it, I may not even have to get my hands dirty. EXO seems to be on her tail...one member is even walking with her right now. Weren't you supposed to protect her...Ma-Ma-Ra?" He responded coyly.
I felt my hand clench the phone tighter, to the point where I was slightly concerned it would break, as the stupid childhood nickname crossed the receiver, "Never call me that again. She's under my care. My protection. She's Lotus property...so back the fuck away and mind your own business the same way you have been doing for the last ten years."
His laugh didn't sit right with me in the slightest, "She is my business. I'll see you soon, daughter. It's time we reunite as a family."
I wanted to scream we weren't a family, I wanted to erase the word daughter from my mind, I wanted to have him killed then and there.
Instead, I hung up.
There was a horrible pause in the room that made me realise everything was becoming more complicated all over again and I groaned, putting my head in my hands and rubbing my eyes.
My memory went back to that man's message, was Yeo-Reom really with an EXO member or was he just messing with me? I doubted it but nothing was impossible, even with Día protecting Yeo-Reom.
I crossed over to my desk, pulling open the file that Día had given me when I dropped off Yeo-Reom earlier. At the top was the name 'Kim Jun-Myeon' printed along with a mugshot photograph of the person in question, "You started this, you bastard."
I dialled the number provided before I could think my decision over properly and waited impatiently, my foot tapping on the floorboards and my tongue clicking every second the dial tone continued playing.
"Kim Suho speaking—"
"You motherfucker!" The line went quiet, and my heart raced with adrenaline as all the built-up anger directed at my father and the hit Suho had set came into play; I was glad to find someone to take it out on. "You absolute bastard. Do you have any idea what you've done?"
Over the phone, I heard a sound similar to that of a snigger before Suho's voice hissed a quick "get out" to the other person in the room, "Excuse me but I don't know who you are so I would appreciate if we could maintain some level of dignity—"
"Fuck dignity, you tried to kill my sister," I blurted, slamming my hand down on my desk, hearing something crack under my palm, my pen.
The line went quiet again, but this time Suho sighed and then grunted, "Well, it's clear to me she's not actually dead so what's the problem here?"
The final strand of patience lingering in my body snapped all too quickly and I shot out of my chair, "Wow, just listen to this crazy man talk! What's the problem? The fucking problem is that she's been in hiding for ten years and because of your stupid hit the man hunting her finally found her!"
"Wait a mi—" Suho tried to cut in.
"I'm not done yet, asshole! Yah, Park Min-Ok told me you would be the thorn in my side when I took over, who knew she would be so right—"
"Stop a minute!" He yelled, trying to get a word in edgeways,
I let out a dramatic gasp, "Oh! Oh! Look at him yelling, who do you think you are, you fucker? You're the one causing all the problems! I haven't had this many knots in my shoulders since the release of 'Scarlet Heart'. Wow, you're frustrating!" I kicked the side of my desk, regretting it immediately as I hopped to clutch my toes that were now burning in pain, screaming silently to myself.
Suddenly, Suho laughed; it wasn't a dark laugh or a sinister one, he just seemed to laugh because something was funny to him, the sound quite pleasant despite the situation we were in. "I can see this situation has been very stressful for you...Miss Kim? I presume that's who you are, the woman who took over from Park Min-Ok three years ago, yes?"
I made a sound of confirmation in the back of my throat, sitting down on one of the couches in my office, "Obviously."
"Right well, I only have a hit on one person right now and that's Kim Yeo-Reom. I suppose she's the sister you're referring to? Is she really in the Red Lotus now? I found it a little hard to believe when I heard."
I nodded before remembering he couldn't see me, huffing angrily, "She is. We've been searching for her for ten years, she's my youngest sister and as of today, she's also an official Lotus member; so, unless you want a war, drop the hit."
Suho didn't speak for a while, I could hear the sound of a keyboard clicking and then something being written down and finally he spoke to one of his own members before returning to me,"The hit is cancelled, Miss Kim."
I hadn't expected him to cooperate so easily, "Just like that? I was starting to get excited—"
"I don't like to draw out the unnecessary," Suho cut in quickly, his voice sounding smug, "However, there is another matter I want to discuss with you if you don't mind spending a few more minutes on the line."
I pretended to study my nails like he could see that too, "That depends, my time is very precious."
"Then I promise you, I will cherish it," Though the line was playful, his tone of voice changed and that told me what he was about to say was serious business, most definitely more gang related.
"Fine, I have some time. Is there a problem you want to discuss?" I asked, giving him my full attention.
Suho hummed, the sound of an email notification echoing over the line, "Another one..." He mumbled before clearing his voice, "Does the name Kim Re-Won sound familiar to you?"
My whole body stilled, any traces of euphoria at freeing Yeo-Reom of EXO fading, "What about him?"
Suho must have been startled by the change in voice because I could sense him move the phone away from his ear, "I can tell this is a sensitive topic. Would you like to meet up to discuss it instead? On mutual grounds, of course."
I deliberated his offer carefully, twirling my pen between my fingers, my eyes trailing the portrait hung above my desk, "I'll send you the address of a tent bar I like. For this conversation, I'm going to need a lot of beer."
