calum sat between luke and michael in the hospitals waiting room. both his knees were bouncing vigorously as nerves, and fear ran throughout his veins. of course, the poor boy was assuming the worst.

ashton died.

thats all that would run through his head, and then he would burst into tears. luke and michael both took turns holding and comforting the poor boy.

ashton had been in surgery for over five hours now, and with every passing minute just gave more time for calum to play out the worst scenarios in his head. scenarios of ashton dying mostly, and calum having to pack all of his things away and move out of the house.

calum couldn't stay in a place where he made memories with the love of his life who had passed away.

"hey," michael says, nudging calum, "get out of your head, and talk to me. why dont we go get some coffee?"

"i-i cant," calum whimpers, afraid. he didnt want to leave to get food or drinks, and then risk the doctor coming out to give him the bad news. calum just couldn't leave his chair. then, calum looks over to the other side of him and sees lukes chair empty.

"he went to ask a nurse if they'd heard anything," michael says, already knowing what calum was thinking, "what if i went and got coffee when luke came back? would you drink some?"

"i don't know," calum says quietly. he starts to play with his fingers absent-mindedly, since he knows he can't bear to stomach anything at the moment but he hadn't eaten anything since ashton went down.

it was almost one in the morning, and calums stomach was not only rumbling but it felt like it was doing cartwheels. suddenly, luke walks back, making calum gasp and grab at lukes wrist.

"what did they say?" calum asks desperately, clinging onto luke like he was trying to get to any part of ashton.

"he's still in surgery," luke sighs, then sits down, "if we're gonna stay up longer, we need fuel."

"i already mentioned coffee, but calum doesn't want to leave," michael says softly, "and i don't want just one of us to go. i'd feel better if two of us went."

luke and michael then looked at each other, knowing it would be them going. there was no way calum was going to leave. at least with calum staying in the waiting room, there was other people around, so they wouldn't have to worry too much about someone going after him.

"call us if anything happens," michael says, standing up, "we're gonna be as quick as we can."

calum nods, and watches as the two walk off. calum just watched the nurses and the people moving around, but to him it felt like time was standing still. no doctors came out to him, or nurses, and soon enough the duo was back with coffee.

"here, drink up," michael says, handing calum a coffee. the boy just looks at the coffee, and then looks up to luke who was still standing.

calums bottom lip quivers, "i-i want ashy!"

"oh, i know love," luke says, and sits down while wrapping his arms around calum, "and you'll get him, yeah? he's gonna be just fine."

"w-what if he's not?" calum whispers, looking into lukes eyes, "what i-if he dies? l-luke i can't l-live without him!"

"hey, hey," michael says, and starts rubbing his back, "he isnt going to die. quit assuming the worst. now please, just drink some coffee."

calum nods, takes the coffee with a shaky hand, and starts to sip at his coffee. they sit in silence again, and they just wait.

its another hour before a doctor comes out, and calls out family for ashton. calums never ran to someone faster with his friends quickly behind him.

"how is he?" calum asks desperately, "i-is he alive? please t-tell me he's alive!"

"ashton is alive. he's finally stable, and he'll be up soon."

"so, what happened?" michael asks, keeping a hand on calums back.

"ashton had a heart attack. luckily, ..."

thats all calum hears before he's falling backwards.
