The Hospital Wait

It's later into the night and I'm really hungry. "Hey Andrew, are you hungry?" "Yea, but I don't want to get up and leave you." Aww how sweet. "It's dinner time right now for hospital hours. Which means it will be delivered!" "Andrew's eyes lit up. "Ok, what do you want to eat?" I had to think about it for a minute. "Rice soup with garlic bread and Hi-C." His eyes went wide. "Baby, that sounds good! I'm going to get the same!" He's never called me baby before so it caught me by surprise. I didn't comment on it though. "Hi is this the cafeteria...Ok good, I would like two orders of rice soup, 4 pieces of garlic bread, and two Hi-Cs delivered to room 609 please....Ok Thank you!" "Wow you remembered everything! Good job Corloah!" "What! You thought I couldn't remember everything!? How dare my girlfriend ever say something like that to me!" I get butterflies in my stomach everytime he calls me his girlfriend. He starts walking to me slowly. Arms wide out. He's walking with a chicken like strut and he plops right down on the bed. He wraps his arms around very lightly and starts smothering me in kisses. "What was that for?" "That's my way of tackling you until you get better." My cheeks turn rosy red. I only know that because Andrew points it out to me. Then there's a small knock on the door. Andrew jumps up and sits in a chair like nothing happened. I mean nothing did happen so I don't know why he did that. "Come in!" He says. Then a guy I'm not very familiar with, but see him here and there, delivers our food. "Thanks!" "Yep." He says walking out the door. We dig into our food. It's so warm and delicious. "Can I have a sip of your drink?" Andrew says in a joking manner. "Only if I get a sip of yours!" "Fine nevermind!" He says laughing really hard. I take a huge bite out of my garlic bread and it makes a loud crunch. After I swallow it I laugh along with Andrew. I don't manage to finish my last slice of garlic bread or last two bits of soup, but I end up making Andrew go to the vending machine at the end of my hall to get me a Gatorade. When he came back he had 6 bottles in his arms. "Just in case you get thirsty in the middle of the night." He put one in my hand, two in my bed, and the rest on my bedside table. Then he pulls one out of his hoodie pocket and sips at it while watching Jumanji on his phone."Why so many bottles of Gatorade?" "I told you just in case!" "I'm going to piss myself!" "You'll be fine. I don't expect you to drink them a-" I finished a bottle and threw it at his face. "So... I finished one!" I say chuckling. "Oh my god!" He says under his breath smacking his forehead. "Sorry I was thirsty. My stomach is also killing me, but it's not a feeling I'm used to. It's still a pain though, just different." "I'll go get a nurse." "I don't want you to leave me, but yes you can go." "Ok. Maybe it's all that gatorade you downed in 2 minutes!" "It started before that, it's more severe than it was earlier." "Ok, I'll be back!" The pain is really sharp. It hurts really bad. I feel like crying, but I stay strong for Andrew. As soon as he walks in I start crying. He rushes over and lays in my bed with me. "It's ok Cruse I'm right here. The nurse will be here soon." He runs his fingers through my soft curly hair and whispers kind words in my ear. The surgeon comes in as my last few tears fall. "Does it hurt that bad?" She asks. I nod my head, "Yes!" "I'm going to do an ultrasound." Andrew says okay for me since I'm in too much pain to answer. The nurse comes back with an ultrasound machine. She quickly examined me and told me the medicine they had to give while I was under made my stomach numb. Meaning the pain was there all along. 'I'm so dumb for not remembering how the medication reacts." "You're not dumb. You're on a lot of meds and you're tired. It's okay. No one is going to judge you."
