(Your POV)

I awoke to the sound of boisterous laughter and conversing. I rubbed my eyes and stood up cautiously, my head was still pounding.

"Aye, what do we got here?" Some guy in a Mickey Mouse shirt and jeans exclaimed. He looks recognizable, maybe he's one of the other guys that saved me from the socs. "Heya baby, did someone have a one night stand with ya and dump you off here?" His chortle echoed through the entire house.

I stood there with my eyes wide open in shock, but before I could make a comeback, someone else chimed in, "Look, she's wearing Pony's boxers!" Everyone went crazy after that comment. Ponyboy was hiding his face in his hands, the poor kid. He was sure getting an eyeful from Darry.

Sodapop eventually gave them a warning, "C'mon guys, cut it out already. Y/n, come get some breakfast, then Pony will walk you to school." I sat down and dug into the food.

Ponyboy gave me some more of his clothes to go to school in. Once I finished getting ready, I went out to the porch where Ponyboy was waiting for me. We didn't speak too much on the way to the school, it was a bit awkward after what Pony's friends said.

"How come I haven't seen you at school before?"

I glanced over to him, then glued my eyes back to the pavement. "I dunno."

He made an effort to keep up a conversation, which I liked. "How long have you been in Tulsa?"

"Quite a few years, maybe two or three."

We stopped for a moment as Ponyboy reached for something in his pocket. He placed a wrinkled piece of paper into my hands. "Do you have any of the same classes as me?" I studied his schedule for a minute. "Uhh... no I don't think so." I shook my head.

"That's too bad, we'll have to meet up between lectures and during breaks!" He added.

I've never been good at making friends. I guess I've never made an effort to, they always get bored and walk out anyway. Ponyboy is different, he makes an effort. Maybe it's too soon to tell, though.

It wasn't too long before we were at the entrance to the school. I waved to Ponyboy and headed to my first class.

---------------

The bell rang for dismissal. Slamming my locker shut, I glanced up and down the hallway in case Pony would show up. After a bit, I decided he was already done with me. I wasn't surprised, I've learned to not get attached to people.

I followed the herd of fatigued teens out the door and made way down the street until a reassuring voice broke out in the silence.

"Y/n!"

Relief washed away my worries when I turned to see his delicate face grinning with joy. "Hey Pone." It was impossible not to smile back. He shifted his weight from side to side and scratched the back of his head while stuttering, "I was just wondering uh.. if you'd like to.. go on a study date- I mean like come over to my house to study. Not like a date... or anything." I chuckled at his request, "That would be nice actually, I've got a biology test or something that I know nothing about..."

The rest of the stroll consisted of talking about ourselves to get to know one another. I found out that Ponyboy's part of a gang. They're like brothers. It makes more sense now, why there were a bunch of obnoxious boys in the Curtis home this morning. I mentioned a bit about my home life. Usually I don't like to speak much of it, but Ponyboy proved himself trustworthy. He cared about what I had to say.

(Narrator's POV)

You plopped down on Pony's bed and cracked open your books. He decided to take a seat in the wooden chair by his desk. You guys exchanged ideas and strategies. He helped you make cue cards as long as you agreed to read aloud a chapter or two of Gone with the Wind. Hours passed as you guys conversed about things and shared cigarettes.

"Darry doesn't like it when we smoke in the house, but it can't hurt." He stated. You giggled and took a cancer stick from the pack too. You've never smoked before, but you wanted to act tuff in front of Ponyboy. A coughing fit started when you inhaled too deeply.

A few minutes after that, you were both silent and studying well. "When do you gotta be home?" Ponyboy asked. You responded with, "Actually, I should probably head home now before I get skinned. It's been over twenty-four hours since I've been home last, remember?"

The gang was just hanging out when you were leaving. Soda and Steve were playing poker while Johnny was watching, Two-Bit was bothering Darry while he was cooking, and Dally was smoking outside on the porch.

"I'll see you around Pony." You assured.

"Yeah, bye y/n." He waved.

You and Ponyboy didn't speak to each other much for the next week.
