You're not sure at what time you finally fall asleep but you surmise that it must have been before Levi switched shifts with the night guard, as you had not heard him leave his post. The light shines in from the huge windows to your right and you rub your eyes with a yawn. As soon as your vision clears, you see Levi standing guard as if he hadn't even left at all. If you hadn't asked him about what time he left and came back, you would've thought he had stayed there all night. You think about whether to say good morning to him or not, knowing how hard it must be for him to stand all day without doing anything and only have a mere 8 hours to rest, shower, and eat for the day when you are sleeping.
Your mouth opens but a knock on the door interrupts the words about to spill out. You close your mouth, it probably was for the best, it's clear Levi is a no-nonsense commander who wasn't any happier about this situation than you. It's even more than clear, he made it quite crystal last night.
He draws his sword at the sound of the knock, his instincts taking over, "Announce yourself," he commands simply.
Through the thick doors Sasha's voice is bright, chirpy, and without any fear of Levi's rough tone, "Sasha Braus, your highness's lady-in-waiting."
Levi seems tense, "You're early," he simply states and nothing more.
"It is her first breakfast with the royal family and she's still not used to being here. I didn't want to rush this morning." She explains a little annoyed that he's pestering her.
For the first time since you left the dining room and made eye contact in the hallway with him, he looks to you. It was up to you whether you would allow her in or not.
"Come in Sasha!" You shout and she opens the door immediately rushing in and ignoring Levi's blank stare.
"Good morning, your highness, how did you sleep last night?" She holds a dress in her hands along with a ribbon and you don't have the heart to tell her how restless it was.
"I slept well, I hope you also slept well last night." You answer while stepping out of your bed and into your slippers. Sasha nearly gasps when she sees you and turns to make sure Levi isn't looking.
"Oh my God your highness, you're indecent. Please tell me your guard didn't see you like this, you should make him wait outside." She rambles covering your body with her own. You look down at your attire, you had on your underwear and then a simple silk gown that covered most of your body, you didn't think that was indecent at all. For God's sake, the gown went past your knees and the most scandalous thing showing was your shoulders and collarbone. Nevertheless, Levi hadn't looked at you at all last night, at least not that you were aware of, and just now when he had looked at you his gaze was trained on your face only.
"Oh, I hadn't realized that nightgowns were considered indecent here. He hasn't looked." You calm her worries and she breathes a sigh of relief.
"I should have come to help you before bed but when I knocked last night, your guard assured me you had already fallen asleep." She looks disappointed in herself, "I should've known you would've been tired, I should have come earlier to explain Vyrenian nightwear to you." Really you hadn't thought it a big deal, the most interesting thing to you was that you hadn't heard the conversation between Sasha and Levi take place at all. As restless as your sleep must have felt you must have been knocked out.
You don't say anything as you ponder how defenseless you were in your sleep. Usually, you weren't a deep sleeper, people talking even in slight whispers was enough to wake you, but the guards had changed shifts once for Levi to leave and once for him to come back, and he had spoken with Sasha and you hadn't heard a thing.
