Chapter 19: A teacher worries for his student
Diomedes is his current student. He was given to his care while he was still an infant. Aeson, Iasōn's Father, wishes Chiron to care for and teach him many subjects. And someday, tell Iason of his lineage and Aeson's circumstances, and hopefully, avenge Aeson and Iasōn's dead mother.
Chiron agreed to take care of Iasōn since he was used to taking care of different people. Also, Aeson was his friend. Other than those reasons, Chiron can't bear the thought of refusing. The consequences of Pelias discovering the child and dooming him of being killed just like Iason's other siblings.
He accepted the offer. Chiron secretly snuck out Iason from the Iolcus and took care of him in Mount Pelion. Just like his other previous students, Chiron learned to care for Iason. More than some of his other students since Iasōn was in his care since he was an infant.
Iason was fascinated with the stories of the famous heroes, the Olympian gods, and the different mythical creatures. Iasōn once said that he would become a hero and be known for saving many people. He would be enthusiastic when it comes to learning words.
Chiron was certain that he would grow into a fine young man. And hopefully, Iasōn wouldn't disappoint him like some of his other previous students.
Then, Iasōn loses his memories and there are a lot of changes that happened to him. Chiron blamed himself for letting this happen. He swore that he would get Iason's memories back.
So when Iason became Diomedes and comforted him that it was okay if he didn't manage to remember the things from before, Chiron thought that he was a failure as a teacher. When he thought about his previous students where most of them went astray and were infamous, he was a horrible teacher.
Chiron would admit that he became more protective of his students since he lost his memories and started using his birth name, Diomedes. He learned that his students were odd and talented.
Then one of his former students, Aristaeus, barged into their lives, and he learned more new things about his student. His talent for magic, which he never discovered.
Chiron could see the amazing potential within his students. He was amazing.Chiron could feel a slight smile forming on his face every time he thought of the time he spent with his student and how Diomedes would grin, smile, or look proud every time he thought to manage to cast some kind of strange spell.
It was heartwarming. Over the years, Chiron learned that he cared and was more biased toward Diomedes compared to his other students. That was why, when he was when Diomedes turned seven, Chiron never told his student of his heritage and how his father was imprisoned in the dungeon. Chiron broke his oath. He never told Diomedes of Aeson's wish to avenge him someday and how he was the rightful heir.
Chiron accepted going to Athens and bringing his student with him so he could get away from Iolcus and be reminded of how he broke the promise. Chiron knows that Diomedes will never be able to escape his destiny. But he would do his best to prolong the inevitable. He wanted his student to spend their time peacefully and live a carefree and comfortable lifestyle like his students always wanted.
As Chiron looks at Diomedes, who currently looks uncertain and nervous, he can't bring himself to scold Diomedes for casting an uncontrollable spell and endangering his life in the process.
Instead...
" Is it still painful? "
Diomedes nodded. Chiron then went to apply some of his magical remedies to his student's wounds. His student would cry out even with the slightest kind of pain, and he wondered how he would become one of those heroes that his student once admired.
After applying the herbal remedies, Chiron also told Diomedes something important.
" Aristaeus was unhappy with the mishaps that you made Diomedes. You would be banned from using magic for 1 week. "
" What?! "
His student stared at him trying to look pitiful. Chiron thought of you to Aristaeus and ask him to lessen the burden but he was reminded that it was a good punishment for Diomedes so that he would be careful on using magic.
Seeing that it wasn't effective, Diomedes sighed.
" Sensei, so what happened with the merchants and slaves? Are they alright? None of them has died, right? "
" Yes, none of them has died. Also, the slave wanted to give her grateful appreciation for saving her life but the merchant caravan was behind their schedule. She doesn't have time to personally offer her sincere thanks because the merchant caravan is running out of time. And also... "
The ungrateful merchants said that servants like her have no right to make a selfish request and thank the child that saved her— was what was left unsaid.
Chiron spent some time with his student, speaking and comforting him when he would cry out of pain every time he moved his body. The wound was too big for Chiron's herbal remedy to heal instantly. At most, it would take a few days.
Later, as he watched his student sleep, it was now time for Chiron to take care of why they even went here to Athens in the first place.
Chiron would teach once again in this place. Considering that a Goddess has asked to be one of the teachers of the young children of the school of Athens, Chiron accepted the offer. And Diomedes was also already a 7-year-old child. That age was the start when the parents sent their children to study and learn new things at school. Chiron thought that despite already knowing many subjects, it was now time for Diomedes to learn and interact with the other children.
Diomedes has been cooped up in the cave for a long time. He hoped that his students would get along with the other children.
