Chapter 39
Listen while reading like I'm gonna lose you.
Brian POV
I walked out of the hospital I couldn't take it. I couldn't believe what I saw, granddad was a shadow of himself. I couldn't stand there looking at him. It hurt everywhere and I wanted to scream so I left. My mind is is a bundle of frustration and uncertainty. I'm not prepared for this.
I hail a taxi stopping at a bar two blocks down my intention wasn't to leave Jinette there but this helpless feeling that took over me I couldn't handle it. I can't just stand there anymore watching as he suffers.
I entered a bar not even caring to look at its name. I walked up to the bar pull out a stool sitting down. I order a ten-year-old brandy knocking it back in one go. It burns my throat, my eyes water but it made me numb. I call Keith to take Jinette to the apartment when she was ready.
I told the bartender to keep them coming as I sit here trying to numb the pain I feel in my entire body. I thought back to all the times he was there for me and the one time when I should be here for him, he couldn't let me. It hurt my heart, my body, and my soul.
"Hello stranger," a seductive voice reaches my ears.
I look over to see a red hair reasonable looking woman she had nothing on Jinette I thought. She looks a bit young too. Like in her early 20s. Maybe twenty-one or twenty-two.
She sits on the barstool next to me.
"You look tense can I keep your company. I'm Sonia by the way."
"I'm Brian."
"You're American," she asks.
"Yeah, but your not a national you have an accent," I told her.
"I'm from Ireland," she says more with her accent.
"I've been there before on a business trip didn't get to even eat at restaurants though," I say to her.
"Do you always make those spontaneous business trips?"
"Sometimes..."
"Is this one of those trips."
"Nope, this one's different."
"When are you heading back," she asks. I'm heading back in the morning," she says.
"Not sure I'm here for a while," I told her.
"Since I'm heading back tomorrow do you want to have some fun, live in the moment and feel the connection we share now?"
"Sorry Sonia I'm a married man, happily I will say too."
"I know, I can see the ring on your finger but your wife isn't here. I can take away all that tension she's causing."
I watch as she drags her finger along my shoulder whispering in my ears.
With the alcohol in my system, I didn't push her away. I just sit there looking at her. I raise my glass to my lips taking a drink.
"Just like that, you will jump into bed with a stranger." I look over at her assessing her reaction.
"Your, not a stranger your Brian."
"Sorry to inform you Sonia, but my wife is always with me. I don't need the company. And she's more than enough for me. Too much actually."
I point to my ring tapping it, so she gets the message. I pick up my coat pay the bartender and walk out.
With the amount of alcohol in my system, I decided not to go back to the hospital. So I head home.
When I reach home I went to the room Jinette was asleep I didn't want to wake her, so I went back to the sitting room.
I plop down on the sofa closing my eyes, I saw granddad's face and how helpless and tired he looked. I can't do a damn thing for him that is what hurts more.
I open my eyes to Jinette calling my name.
"Babe where were you," she questions sitting next to me.
"I had to clear my mind." I lay back on the sofa sighing.
"What's this," she says pulling to my collar.
she looks at me intently. Then there is a shocked look on her face.
"Is this lipstick stain on your shirt, Brian." I sit up rubbing my face.
"Is this how you cleared your mind." She air quote.
"What are you talking about," I frown looking at her.
I pull my collar to see what she going on about when realization washes over me. I close and open my eyes. She was watching my every move like a hawk.
"Jinette" I reach for her hands she slip away folding her hands over her baby bump.
"Baby listen....."
She cut me off "let me hear the lies you're about to tell."
"Listen I've never lied to you, just let me explain."
"Explain what, that you've left me, your pregnant wife to go do this."
She points to my collar. As tears stream down her face.
"Baby don't cry," I try reaching for her again she pulls away pacing up and down as tears fall from her eyes.
I sign running my hands over my face
This can't be happening right now.
"Brian," she calls my name. "Are you.......Che........" She pauses holding her chest as if the words are choking her to come out.
"NO. I'm not, I didn't."
"Then tell me what the hell is this" she screams holding her chest crying.
"Jinette, baby listen....I love you."
"Were you thinking about that when you were out doing God knows what with God know who?"
My heart shatters at seeing her like this, I know this doesn't look good but she has no faith in me. She's not even listening to me.
"Get out" she screams at me. "I'm not leaving you, just be rational and listen to me."
"get out, Brian. You blame me that's why you did this. You do this to me, Brian. Get out or I will do something and the both of us will regret it." She cries as she holds her chest.
"Jinette listens to me don't assume anything just give me a chance to explain what happened."
"Ok, you're not leaving."
she picks up the vase on the end table by the sofa pelting it at my head. I sidestepped trying to reach her again.
"Brian get away from me." I try to get closer to her.
she picks up an ashtray, I put out my hands "listen God damn it, woman."
"Woman, I didn't do anything I was at a bar."
she pelts the astray at me I sidestepped again, damn she has a temper. She is irritating the hell out of me by not listening to a word I say.
"Listen damn it, I was having a few drinks and a woman...."
"Get out Brian, I don't want to hear it."
"Ok, you want me to leave."
"Yes!"
"You sure that's what you want!"
I put my hands at my waist looking at her. "for what it's worth, I love you, wife. I would never do this to you especially now."
"Go!" she screams at me.
"Fine."
I walk to the door. Open it walking out closing it with a bang.
