Back and forth. Back and forth. You pace in the dining hall while you wait to hear from Don and Gilda. Nobody has seen them since the afternoon and you're starting to worry. Emma and Norman are sat at one of the tables with worried looks on their faces as well. You can't help but think the worst.
"Don! Gilda!" Emma says as she springs up out of her seat. You look over to the hallway and see Don stomp down the hall, Gilda timidly following. The three of you all run over to them and Ray peeks his head out of the kitchen before joining you. "Oh thank goodness, I thought you'd...".
"Where were you?" Ray asks Don, cutting off Emma's sentence. He stands directly in front of him and puts his hands in the pockets of his dirty apron.
"After dinner, follow Don and I into the library" Gilda says softly from behind the taller boy. Seconds after, the dinner bell is rung and you all look at each other. You nod and the others do the same. Emma and Norman walk over to their seats while you join Ray in walking back to the kitchen.
"You don't think they..." You say almost thinking out loud.
"I know they did. They had to have, Gilda looks guilty of something" Ray says as he reaches his hands behind his back and unties one of the strings around his waist.
"You're right. They'll tell the truth when we ask them, won't they?" You ask him.
"I don't know if they will at first but they'll probably crack and tell us" He responds before patting his neck and turning around, signaling for you to untie the string around his neck. You roll your eyes and laugh a little before walking over and starting to undo the knot.
"For being one of the smartest here, I'd think you'd be able to untie your own apron" You say as you use your fingers to detangle it.
"Like you can?" He asks.
"Yes. I can" You say with a smirk before untying the final loop and patting his neck before he turns back around and takes off the apron, "Did you cook all this?".
"Yeah, more or less" He says casually as he hangs the apron on a nail in the wall. You widen your eyes in surprise and glance at all the food spread across the counter, ready to be served.
"You're one hell of a cook" You laugh, "How'd you learn?".
"Books, Mom, some of our previous older siblings too" He answers as he takes a few trays of food into his hands. You take one of the trays off the counter top and start to walk with him into the dining hall.
"This smells really good. What is it?" You ask after a whiff of food passes through your nose.
"Chicken and rice" He says as you continue walking. He then splits from you and walks over to one of the tables, placing the tray in the center. You walk over to a table parallel to the one he went to and do the same.
.
"Well?" Ray breaks the silence as he rocks back and forth in a rocking chair sat in the corner of the room. You and Emma are sitting side by side with Norman standing next to her. Across from the three of you is Don and Gilda, sitting in complete silence.
"We went into Mom's secret room" Don admits, unable to make eye contact with anything but the floor.
"But how?" Emma asks in surprise.
"You see, Don stole the key" Gilda mutter softly.
"He what?" You repeat. You heard what she said clearly but you can't wrap your head around the fact that he stole it.
"Wait, did she..." Norman starts.
"I don't think she noticed. And we already put it back so..." Gilda responds.
"That was a stupid move" Ray scoffs from his corner, "Did you not even stop to think that the room could've had a camera or an alarm? What would you have done then? If Mom or Krone found out, you two- no, all of us would be-".
"Tell us what would happen, Ray" Don cuts off Ray. "Would we all be killed? We searched the secret room. We found Little Bunny". He says before slamming his fist against the table.
"You kept us hopeful! You said we'd save them! But we can't save them, can we? Because they're all..." Don says as he stands up. He starts to cry before quickly picking his head up. "Conny and the others are...". Emma then stands up out of her seat.
"Look! I'm sorry. I'm so sorry" Emma says before bowing her head as a sorry gesture.
"So they're really..." Gilda says in disbelief.
"See, I told you Gilda. They were lying to us after all" Don says before leaning over Emma who's still bowed over, "What are you hiding? Just tell us the whole truth". He then stands back up and Emma does the same. She looks over at you, and then at Norman who nods.
