The bell rings in the distance as you sit at the table for breakfast, the smell of eggs and bacon fill the air.

"Good morning my dear children, let us appreciate that all 37 of you are able to live happy lives under this roof. Thank you for the food" Mom says.

"Thank you for the food" Everyone says in unison. You pick up your fork and move around a piece of scrambled egg in your plate. You look to your left and see Ray drinking coffee but with a dull expression. You can't help but turn to your right to see Norman, but the space that's normally filled with a tall and collected boy is now empty for the first morning ever. The dining hall is full of voices laughing and talking but you, Emma, and Ray stay silent.

.

"Y/n! Come down and play with us!" Yvette asks.

"Not right now Yvette" You respond.

"But you promised you'd play castle with us!" She whines as she looks up to your spot in the tree.

"I'll play later, I promise" You say.

"Alright" She sighs as she runs back to a group of children. A cool breeze flows through the air and you get the chills. You climb down from the tree and walk into the house for warmth. You quickly get bored and decide to go to the library, making your way up the stairs and into the book filled room. You open the door and see that it's empty. You walk in and take a book from a shelf before seeing someone from the corner of your eye. In the corner of the room you see Ray sitting against a bookshelf fast asleep. You smile to yourself before walking over to him and slumping down to his right. You then take his head and rest it on your shoulder so he's more comfortable, his eyes flutter open for a moment.

"Shh it's okay, it's just me. Go back to sleep" You whisper as you put your hand on his head. He sighs before leaning into the crook of your neck and falling back asleep in only a few seconds.

He must not be sleeping well

"Hey, Y/n" Emma says as she shakes you awake. Instead of the feeling of a wooden floor under you, you feel the soft sheets on your bed. You flutter your eyes open and see her standing over you, "Follow me". You nod and get up from your bed, still confused on how you got there in the first place. She leads you down the dark hallway and descends the stairs. She then brings you into the dining hall where you're greeted by Don and Gilda. Across from them is Ray sitting in a chair.

"What's going on" You ask in a tired voice. Emma stands next to Gilda and Don and you pull out a chair next to Ray and skunk down in it.

"We should start deciding what we're gonna do. I mean, for our sake" Don says.

"Whatever" Ray says under his breath, "Who cares. Let's just die here. The cliffs make it impossible to escape and the only bridge is attached to headquarters. Plus I'm tired. Really tired". He's sitting with his elbows on his knees and his head bowed down so you couldn't see his face. You put your hand on his back to try and comfort him but he takes it and places it back in your lap.

"Here" Emma says as she holds out her hand with the device to break the tracker to Ray.

"Keep it. I don't need it. If you wanna escape then do it" He responds before picking up his head, "Sorry Emma, I'm out". Emma chokes on her breath before turning around and limping into the hallway, closing the door behind her.

"Ray! Come on!" Don yells.

"Sorry. Gilda, Don, Y/n. I'm sorry" He apologies with his head tilted down again. Don and Gilda look at each other before exiting the room, leaving you and him alone.

"Ray. You don't actually mean that, do you?" You ask softly.

"I do." He responds shortly.

"Huh? Come on, you can't just give up. You've been working to escape practically your whole life" You say as you stand up from your chair.

"Well I'm giving up. I'm sorry" He apologies again. You walk from your chair to in front of his.

"Hey. Look up at me" You say softly. He hesitantly picks up his head and gazes up at you with tired eyes, "Promise me you'll do this. You won't give up".

"Promises mean nothing." He responds.

"They don't mean nothing to me, you know that" You say in rebuttal, "Now promise me".

"You must be a real idiot to still believe in promises" He scoffs.

"Why don't you?" You ask passively.

"Norman promised us he'd escape. He promised he'd survive. Look at us now. He's gone" He says in anger as he stands up from his seat.

"Stop it, don't talk about him that way" You yell back.

"Oh yeah? Make me" He yells before crossing his arms over his chest.

"So you don't believe in promises. Do you not believe in the ones we've made" You yell.

"I don't know what to believe anymore. I'm tired of this and I'm tired of being lied to. You must be so dense that you still trust people" He yells back before walking towards the hallway.

"I know you did not just call me that" You yell. He turns around and stops to face you.

"I did. What are you going to do about it. Cry?" He yells in response. You start to feel your blood boil over in anger.

"Alright fine! Have it your way. We won't take you when we escape. It wouldn't make a difference if you weren't there anyway!" You yell before stomping out of the dining hall, hitting into his shoulder as you pass him.

"Fine by me!" He yells back. As you stomp up the staircase, tears start to fill your eyes. You can't bear to see one of the people you care about the most in such a low, or be in an argument with them. You walk into your bedroom and lay in your bed silently crying before drifting to sleep.
