With an olive green book in hand, you sit outside under a wooden awning that connects to the house. The awning is built over a set of doors that go from the dining hall to a clearing outside. There's a picnic table under it which is where you've taken refuge while the rain poured down from the sky. You can hear the sound of droplets hitting the awning and splashing down onto the ground. The sound is relaxing and almost therapeutic to you.
This is what you've done almost every time it rained for as long as you can remember. It's hard to think that in just over a week you won't be able to do this anymore, so you try to take as much in as possible. Your eyes scan the words from left to right as you read the book.
"What are you doing" You hear a low and raspy voice say. You don't bother to pick up your head to look at them but instead you try to focus on the book.
"Reading" You reply. You're sat on the bench of the picnic table with one leg curled under your body while you sit on it and the other knee pulled close to your chest.
"Couldn't you have just read inside" The same voice says. You pick up your head from the book and see Ray standing in the open doorway with his back against the wall.
"Mmmm, no" You respond, "I like it out here better". You keep your eyes glued on the tall boy standing in the doorway, his eyes doing the same to you. Your eyes follow him as he sighs and walks over to your bench.
"Are you at least reading something good?" He asks. He stops in his path and stands behind you a little to your left.
"I think it's pretty good but I'm not sure if you'd read it" You say with a nervous smile while looking at him. He smirks for a moment before asking another question.
"Why are you out here anyway. You don't exactly strike me as the rain type" He says before finally sitting down to your left. You close your book and place your legs down so that your sneakers touch the ground.
"And you don't strike me as one either, but here you are" You respond in a joking manner with a small laugh. Ray just smiles and chuckles a few times.
"I guess you're right, I never really liked the rain but I never had a problem with it either. Except for when I was younger" He says while he looks out at the trees in the close distance. You watch as his face is painted with calmness, all his muscles and tension releasing into peacefulness.
"What do you mean when you were younger?" You ask. He continues looking out at the scenery before turning his head towards you and looking into your (e/c) eyes.
"I used to have a super irrational fear" He says, giving zero context to what it was. You try to think back to when you were younger but you can't seem to recall anything about Ray being scared.
"Which was?" You ask. He continues to look into your eyes but says nothing. "Okay then, was it...snakes?".
"No."
"Bugs?".
"No."
"Mud?"
"Who the hell has a fear of mud" He responds. You're all out of ideas and place your chin in your palm while you try to think. The rain continues but it starts to be accompanied by other sounds and flashes too. You hear thunder crash from over you and out of the corner of your eye you see Ray jump a little bit, giving you an idea. You turn your head to him and paint a soft smile across your face.
"Were you scared of thunder?" You ask. He sighs and nods his head making you smile a bit more.
"What's with the smug smile" He asks, trying to avoid the question. You stand up from your seat and swing your legs over the bench. Ray furrows his eyebrows in confusion as to where you're going. You take a few steps backwards and suddenly you feel a drop of water hit your forehead, then two, then after a few seconds you have thousands of water droplets hitting your face and hair. You look up at the sky and put both your hands out in front of you trying to take in as much of this moment as possible.
I feel so free
"What are you-" Ray begins but is quickly cut off by you reaching your hand out in front of him. He looks down at your palm before looking up into your eyes. You smile at him as his cheeks tint a shade of pink and he places his hand in yours. You pull him out of his seat and start to walk backwards before you hear thunder crash over your heads again. Ray jumps and rushes over to you, embracing you in his arms out of fear.
You stand in the rain while his arms are wrapped around your body for a moment, making sure to take in this vulnerable moment. You take your right hand and place it on the back of his neck, pulling his head down and into the crook of your shoulder while you wrap your other arm around his back.
"It's okay, you're alright" You say trying to reassure him. You had no idea he was still afraid of thunder but never really thought to ask in the first place. You feel his muscles tense up while the thunder crashed but release after the sound faded. To think that this guy: the brains behind the escape; the one who can break the tracking devices; is scared of thunder?
You stand with him out in the grass while the rain pours down for a while longer before he picks up his head and looks down at you. His dark green eyes gaze into yours while his arms are wrapped around you.
"See? That wasn't so bad" You say with a slight smile. Ray smiles back at you before tapping his hand on your shoulder and running away.
"Huh?" You say as you furrow your eyebrows watching him run. It takes you a moment before you realize he wants to play tag. You smile and laugh before you chase after him. The ground under you is soft from the rain but it doesn't stop you from trying to catch him. Ray turns his head back to see if you followed and sees you chasing after him laughing. He just stares and smirks at you before turning his head forwards again and continuing to run in circles around the house.
You do a few laps around the house trying to catch him when you watch him slip on some mud and fall onto his back. You stop in your tracks and laugh hysterically while he groans in anger. You continue laughing before he reaches his hand up and grabs your shirt, pulling it down so that you fall too and join him on the wet ground. You slam onto the ground and Ray starts laughing before you start laughing with him.
You quickly forget about the escape and the farm and for a moment, all seems right in your small world.
