"Is it okay?" I ask Sofia as she eats her mac n cheese. "Not better than my moms, but it's good!" She says and my jaw drops and I laugh. "Well thankyou...I think." I say and she giggles.
"Aren't you gonna eat?" She asks. "You want me to eat with you?" I ask and she nods. So I grab a bowl and get some for myself. I sit beside her and we eat together. "Do you go to school?" She randomly asks. "Yeah, but not like you go to school. I'm in college." I tell her. "Oh so you're really smart." She says and I giggle.
"I wouldn't say that. You don't have to be really smart to go to college, you just have to be smart enough." I shrug. "Do you think I'm smart enough?" She asks.
"Hm, what's 5 times 10?" I ask. "50." She says. "Boom. You'll definitely be okay." I say and she smiles. "I'm done." She says and puts down her fork. I take our bowls and wash the dishes. "Can I take a shower?" She asks. "Do you usually take one by yourself?" I ask since all parents are different.
"Yeah. But can you sit in the bathroom with me?" She asks. "Sure. Let's go." I say and we head upstairs. She grabs a towel out of the hall closet and we go in the big bathroom. She turns on the shower and I turn around while she gets in the shower. "You good?" I ask once I hear the curtain shut. "Yeah." She says and I turn around.
"Thanks for watching me tonight. It's way better than going over to my dads." She says. "Really?" I ask. "Yeah! You're way more fun, and you actually talk to me. Dads always on business calls or talking to Kylie." She says. "Who's Kylie?" I ask. "My dad's girlfriend." She says with a tone of annoyance in her voice.
"Is she around a lot?" I ask since Leah literally said Sofia's not allowed to be around her dads girlfriend. "Almost all the time." She says and I furrow my brows.
"Do you miss your dad?" I ask. "Yeah...I miss the old him, before he left." She says. "I'm sorry baby...at least you have your mom, right?" I say. "Yeah. I like it here wayyy better than at my dads house." She says.
"You and your mom have fun, huh?" I ask. "Allll the time." She says and I smile. "You know, sometimes you should go outside and help her garden." I tell her. "Garden?" She asks. "Yeah, I'm sure your mom could use the help." I say.
"But why would I garden, it's dirty." She says and I giggle. "It's actually really fun, and the work pays off. There's also a lot of scholarships for gardening too." I say. "What's a scholarship?" She asks. "Well if you're really good at something, then colleges will want you to come to their school, and you could major in agriculture." I tell her.
"Really??" She asks. "Yeah. That's actually a really good major choice. You can learn a lot of cool things and make good money." I say.
"Just by gardening?" She asks, interested. "Well, it's a little more than that, but that's the base of what it deals with." I say. "Do you think you'd be interested in that?" I ask. "Yeah!" She says. "Then a great way to start is helping your mom outside. Okay?" I ask. "I can do that." She says. "Good, your mom can teach you a lot of stuff I'm sure." I say.
Eventually she finishes her shower and I hand her a towel. I go downstairs as she gets dressed in her room. Then she comes over to me on the couch and hands me a brush. "Can you brush my hair?" She asks. "Sure." I say and she sits straight in my lap. I laugh a little and start to brush her hair. "You have really good hair. It's so long and thick." I tell her. "My mom always says that." She says. "Well she's right." I say.
"I could braid your hair if you want, then it'll be nice and wavy in the morning." I suggest. "Ok, I'll go get some hair ties." She says and goes to the bathroom.
She brings me back 2 hair bands, and I braid her hair into 2 french braids. "Done." I say and she gets off my lap, sitting beside me. "Are you ready for bed, it's almost 9." I say. "Mmmm, can we watch something before I go to sleep??" She begs.
"Sure, what do you wanna watch?" I ask and take the remote. She tells me her favorite show, and we watch one episode which is about 30 minutes long, then I take her upstairs to go to bed.
"Goodnight." I say. "Night Jennifer." She says and I shut her door. I turn off all the lights upstairs and go down to the kitchen. I put the dishes away and wipe down the counters. I may not be super clean at my house, but I have manners when it comes to other peoples houses, especially when I'm getting paid.
Once I finish cleaning up, I sit on the couch and put something on the tv. I sit there for an hour and a half, then the front door unlocks and opens. I look over my shoulder and watch Leah walk through the door.
She sets her purse down and sighs. "Hey, how'd it go?" I ask. "Mmm, not great." She says. "What happened?" I ask as she runs her fingers through her hair. She comes over and sits beside me. "The dude was so dry, I tried so hard to start conversation but he literally didn't know how to socialize." She rolls her eyes and takes off her heels. "Jeez, where'd you find this guy?" I ask. "A friend set me up on a blind date. And I'm never doing it again." She says.
"Damn, well I'm sorry it sucked, I know that feeling." I say. "It's okay. Looking for a man isn't really my thing." She shrugs. "Oh so you just let them come to you?" I smirk. "And what about it?" She says with attitude and we both laugh.
"I mean, that's the way to do it." I agree with her. "Exactly." She says. "Is Sof asleep?" She asks. "Yeah." I say. "That's surprising. You're good with her." She says. "She's a sweet girl, I don't mind being with her." I say.
She smiles. "Oh yeah- here." She says and hands me the money. I sigh since it really is too much, then I take the money. "Thankyou for watching her." She says and we both stand up. "No problem." I say. "I'll walk you out." She says and we both walk to the front door.
She opens the door and shuts it behind us once we step outside. We slowly walk over to my house while talking, then we get to my front porch.
"Your parents aren't home?" She asks since their car still isn't here. "Yeah, I guess they're still out." I say and glance at the empty driveway. "Will you be okay by yourself?" She jokes.
"I think I can manage." I giggle. "You sure?" She smiles. "Unless you wanna be my babysitter, then I'm good." I say and she smiles. "I'll consider it." She says and I smile. "Please do." I say and she giggles. "I'll see you around Jennifer." She says. "Bye Leah." I say and she smiles before walking off my front porch.
I watch her walk away, down the side walk until the bushes block me from seeing her. I turn and go to open the door, then I realized it's locked. I squat down and pull up the welcome mat, expecting to see the spare key, but it's not there.
Then I remember my mom moved it a while ago since under the mat is way to obvious for a spare key. "Fuck." I mutter and jiggle the door knob. I rub my forehead and walk around to the backyard, hoping for the back door to be unlocked, but it's not.
I sigh and debate on going over to Leah's house til my parents come home, but it's really late and I don't wanna bother her. I look at the fence that goes up the wall of the outside of our house so vines can grow on it, and debate if I really wanna do this.
I back up and see that my windows open. "Fuck it." I sigh and start to climb the fence. It's not like this is my first time, I used to use this to sneak out all the time in high school.
I get halfway up it and glance to the side, noticing that the windows to Leah's room are open. I go to look away, but that's when the silhouette of Leahs body appears in the window.
I can't see her face or any details because of the curtains, but I can see the outline of her body and hair. She takes her dress off, pulling it above her head, revealing her hourglass figure.
She starts to unhook her bra, and I look away, continuing to climb until I get to my roof, I crawl through my window, and shut it behind me. I walk over to my other window and peak out of it, seeing Leah brushing her hair with a tshirt on now. I shut my curtain and turn around. I sigh and shake my head.
I change into my pajamas and get ready for bed.
