Chapter Nine

The Pack

"Well she certainly reminds me of Aurora," Johnny stated as he entered the cave not too far away from where Evelyn was staying but far enough. He had already transformed into his wolf form with Leon.

"Don't mention her name. She's been dead for years. How can Evelyn remind you of her?" He watched as Leon growled the words out at him.

"She's innocent and sweet. She just looks lost and confused to me. Why did you bring her into the forest? You didn't let me keep the little girl," Johnny grumbled.

"Ranfore wants me to murder her." Johnny listened to his best friend's words.

"So you've never had a problem with ending people's lives before," Johnny pointed out.

"Don't you think I already know that? There's something different about this one. I know I have to kill her but every time I'm with her something prevents me from doing so. I don't know why I feel like I can't end her life. I don't even want to end her life," Leon admitted.

"Sounds like you're in love with this girl," Johnny chortled.

"I'm hardly in love with this woman. She's irritating." Leon said denying it.

"Well either you're infatuated with this woman or you're in love with her. It can't be both. What are you going to do when the pack hears about this?" Johnny stood rooted on the spot in the cave beside his best friend.

"Oh wow I never knew I had an expert in the pack." Leon moved around in circles until he lay down on the stony cold ground.

"Well next time you want to talk, start a conversation with somebody else," Johnny advised.

"Sorry I'm just so mystified at the moment by all of this," Leon apologised.

"Well I don't know what else I can say. But all I know is that either this woman is just an infatuation or she just might be your soul-mate." Shrugging his shoulder blades he yawned once again.

"Well if she is my soul-mate then I will be very incensed by it. Wolves and humans do not go together, everyone knows that," he confirmed.

"So what? To be perfectly honest. I don't see what the problem is with different species being together. Love is just love. It's unconditional and uncontrollable. You can't help who you fall in love with-you just do. If I had one more chance to see Aurora again I would take it. Do you really think I minded if she were a human being? No I didn't. I just fell for her and I couldn't help it. Even if she were working for Ranfore it wasn't her fault. In life you always have a choice sometimes it's easier to think that you don't when you do whether they are good or bad you always have a choice. So you can protect Evelyn or murder her." Johnny gazed towards Leon as if he were in deep thought.

This was surprising to Leon, he had never heard Johnny speak like this or say something as profound as this to him.

For a few minutes they sat in silence beside each other.

"Yeah but that was different; she was Ranfore's personal stripper not a person that he wanted dead, or not at the beginning anyway," said Leon after a while, breaking the silence.

"It doesn't matter if she were a personal stripper or not. It doesn't matter if Evelyn is supposed to be a victim or not. From what you've told me, you can't kill her and she doesn't deserve to die. Why does Ranfore want her dead anyway?" Curiosity got the better of Johnny as he stared at Leon for a while.
