Chapter Twenty-Three

The Research

The first day of working for Peter Stevenson was anything but great. Even trying to communicate with other colleagues was difficult or proved to be difficult. As she continued to walk through the large hallway towards the ladies bathroom she noticed some of the women who worked in the building stared at her before speaking to her.

"You look a mess when was the last time you took a look at yourself?" one of them asked not so pleasantly.

She didn't respond to that statement there was no point in arguing with them. They weren't worth it and arguments wouldn't solve anything she rolled up her eyes and watched them leave. After they left she looked in the mirror and indeed she was a right mess. Her hair was slightly messy, her eyes had large bags underneath them, and she looked drained of all colour. She ran her hands through her hair and turned on the cold water and splashed her face with the cold water trying to cool down with it. After a while she left the bathroom and made her way back towards her office noticing a pile of files on her desk making her groan slightly since she was feeling tired.

As she sat down at her desk she looked at the news website before noticing an article that had caught her eye. The headline read man found dead in desert. She continued to read the article trying to find out who the man was and to her horror it was her father. Liam Monroe. She couldn't weep or feel sorry for him. Despite the fact that he was her father she couldn't feel depressed for the fact that he was no longer alive.

A knock came at her door as she turned around she was faced with Amber Sterling a woman that loved a good gossip and seemed to have her eye on Peter Stevenson for whatever reason she did not know she could only guess that the woman had a crush on the man.

"Here are some more files for you to sort out." she stated leaving them on her desk.

"Thank you,"

"I hope I'm not intruding but the man that was found dead on the news, is he by any way related to you?" she asked.

"He was my father." Evelyn replied bluntly.

"I take it you have other relatives?" she asked.

"That is no concern of yours." Evelyn responded getting irritated with her.

"Word of advice my dear. Don't try and make enemies with me or with everyone here. It's not a good idea you will be hated by everyone here if you end up making enemies of them." she replied.

"I am not here to make enemies or friends, I am here to work. On the contrary I know there are some people here whom already dislike me but I am not here to be liked or disliked I'm here to work and I will not be poisoned by your words or anybody else's. I do not seek your advice nor do I need it but thank you just the same." she knew she was being slightly rude here but she wasn't in the mood to be threatened by anyone especially someone who had worked here longer than she had on her first day. It had happened too many times in the past and she wasn't going to let it happen again even if it meant getting into trouble with Peter.

She was about to say something back when someone coughed behind her.

"I take it you are finished here?" he said sternly towards Amber.

"Yes Peter." Amber said rather shyly.

"Get back to work then." He instructed her watching her leave before entering Evelyn's office.

"Hello Mr Stevenson." she greeted him pleasantly.

"I must say you handled that situation very well."
