What? Where did you get that idea from?” Charlie jumped.

“Just answer the question Charlie,” Meg asked, grinning from ear to ear.

“I…what made you ask such a stupid question?” he said, his cheeks a fine shade of pink.

“I knew it,” Meg said happily.

“What are you talking about?” Charlie asked?

“That you like Ruby.”

“Of course I do; she’s my friend,” Charlie replied, playing dumb.

“That’s not what I mean. I mean you like, like her. Like you have a crush on her. Don’t play dumb,” Meg said.

“Meg this is nonsense. I-” Charlie started.

“Come on Charlie don’t make excuses,” She interrupted.

“Is it really that obvious?” Charlie finally admitted.

“No no don’t worry. It is just things like this that we girls notice.”

“Oh my god do you think she knows? I would die if she found out!”

“Don’t worry, probably not. She is too preoccupied with her stepparents.”

“Well do you think she likes me back?”

“I’m not sure. Maybe you should ask her.”

“No! I would die before I told her this. She can’t find out!”

Before Meg could say anything, they heard footsteps approaching. “Quick! To the tunnel!” Charlie frantically whispered to Meg.

Meg quickly got up and moved towards the floorboards Ruby left open for them before she left. She quickly jumped down without

using the ladder for fear of discovery, and Charlie went down after her, pulling the floorboards in place behind him. From their hiding place, Meg and Charlie could hear everything going on above them. The front door swung opened and a man shouted, “Get in you filthy creature! You should be grateful to a have a family like us!” then they heard a large whack.

Meg did her best to stifle a gasp while Charlie’s face burned with anger. It took all of his strength and Meg’s strength to keep him from jumping out.

“Don’t worry,” he said evilly. “I’ll make sure you are locked in and that you won’t be able to come out. When we get back, we might have time for a few fun fames. Just you, me, and the lovely Regina over there. I know I’m very excited.”

“Hurry Devlin!” a voice from outside called. “If we don’t get to work now, we will never have the problem resolved in time for the party!”

“I’m coming Regina darling!” Devlin called to her. Then, he turned his attention to Ruby and said with a sneer, “We won’t be back for long!”
