Untying the Knot

Ruby silently watched Meg and Charlie in the pool. They were racing each other, and Meg was winning. Out of nowhere, Charlie caught up to her and splashed her, making her stop for a moment and giving him the chance to go ahead of her. Meg shrieked and swam after him. Ruby sighed and turned away from the window. She sat on the toilet lid with her knees curled up. She wished she could join them, but she didn’t have the courage to do so. Charlie’s mother was a really tiny woman, so she and Meg borrowed some of her old bikinis to swim in, since none of them owned any. She wished it wouldn’t fit on her, but it fit perfectly. Now, she shivered, really feeling the chill of the AC in only a bikini. Soon or later, Charlie or Meg would come in looking for her. She had no choice but to go now. She took a deep breath and slowly made her way to the pool.

“There you are Ruby!” Charlie called out to her. “Come right in; the water is just fine!”

Ruby forced a smile on her face and slowly stuck one foot into the water. The icy water sent a chill down her spine, and it didn’t help settle the butterflies in her stomach. “I think my stomach hasn’t finished digesting the ice cream yet. I’ll just sit on the pool side and watch.”

“What? No you have to swim with us!”Charlie begged.

“Yeah we aren’t taking no for an answer,” Meg said. She came and she pushed Ruby in, and Ruby plunged into the water. She heard giggling above her as she failed to move her hands properly. Meg told her to stand up, and somehow, her legs commanded her. She resurfaced, and found that the water barely reached her chest. When asked if she was okay, she merely smiled. Then, Charlie brought the inflatable bed and pulled her onto it. Ruby was quick to agree, thinking she would be safe from the water. She lied down quietly and closed her eyes, letting the sun warm her body. Charlie and Meg slowly pushed her, and suddenly, she felt herself being flipped. As she plunged into the water, her ears filled up with water, and she struggled to breath. She saw the pool floor coming closer and closer, and when she tried to push herself back, she wasn’t able to. Her green eyes were stinging from the chlorine and her loose hair got in her face. She flung her arms and legs helplessly. Her chest felt tighter and tighter, until suddenly she was forced to open her mouth to breath. Water came rushing down her throat and she became really dizzy. She was losing conscious quickly, and she knew that she was going to die. She struggled helplessly one more time before she slipped into unconsciousness.
