Ruby looked up and was surprised to find tears in her eyes. “Okay, I will go.”
“You don’t have to come to me. I am already here,” Charlie said from behind her. Ruby turned around and gasped. She almost fell of the rock, but Charlie stepped in and caught her. He steadied her and then asked, “Did you really mean what you said right now, Ruby?”
“Were you here the whole time?” she asked, looking up at him.
“Yes I was. Now please answer my question,” Charlie implored.
Ruby, suddenly feeling shy, nodded and looked at her feet, not daring to look at his face.
“Really?” Charlie asked her, lifting her chin so he could look directly at her. Ruby closed her eyes and didn’t reply. “What’s wrong, Rue? Are you mad at me?”
“No,” She whispered, and slowly opened her eyes.
“Then what is it?” He asked her patiently.
Ruby turned around, her back to his face. “It’s just that, I was such a jerk. How could you possible forgive me when I said such horrible things? You are always so nice to me and never say anything mean. I am a horrible person, and I don’t deserve to be forgiven. I-” Ruby ranted, and only stopped when she felt a hand on her shoulder.
He turned her around, and looked directly at her before he spoke. “Ruby stop. You are such a nice and kind person. You said something that you honestly didn’t mean, and I understand that. I don’t care what you say, I will never ever be mad at you. You are the miracle of my life, so how can I ever be mad at you? I love you so much Ruby and nothing will ever change that.”
