Ruby sat up and looked at Charlie. “You don’t understand! They are all going to hate me now! Now I can never go back to the school or see any of them again!”
“That’s not true. Our class isn’t filled with idiots. Only one: Darcy. They are all going to care about you even more instead of hate you. You’ll see. Come on, let’s go back.”
“No. you go back Charlie, but I will not go back. You can tell me what happens while I stay right here.”
“Come on Rubes. Be a little practical. I can’t and I won’t leave you here. Besides, you told me school is your only escape from your stepparents. You don’t want to lose that. It won’t hurt to try to ask them, and don’t forget, I’m always here for you. Come on Rubes.”
Ruby dried her eyes and slowly stood up. Charlie engulfed her in a hug, and then they slowly started their way back to the school. They were welcomed with cheers, and that surprised Ruby. She was also happy to see that Meg came.
“Ruby darling. Let’s go wash your face and then we could come back and join the class okay?” Mrs. Marigold said gently. Ruby nodded as tears filled her eyes. “Charlie, please go take a seat. We will be back in just a minute. Class, pass up all your papers and put them on my desk. Please, nobody discuss the topic.”
When they returned, Ruby started to go to her seat, but Mrs. Marigold held on to her shoulder. “Before you sit down darling, Darcy has something she needs to talk to you about. Darcy? Please stand up.”
“Darcy stood up and stared at her feet. “I’m sorry.” She mumbled. Mrs. Marigold cleared her throat, and Darcy repeated herself a little louder. Mrs. Marigold knew this was the best she could do with Darcy, so she turned back to Ruby. “Do you want to talk about this? The choice is up to you.”
Ruby looked around the room, and then said in a quiet voice, “Do you guys all hate me?”
Everyone started to speak at once. “No!” “Of course not!” “Definitely not!” “We still love you!”
Ruby relaxed a little, and then she said, “Guys it really isn’t a big deal. Please, can we never talk about it, and please can we not tell anyone else. I don’t know what Darcy said, but it really isn’t a big deal.” When she said this, she stared directly at Charlie, begging him not to argue with her.
“I asked them while you were in the bathroom and they told me what she said, Ruby, and she was extremely exaggerating. She made them sound like they didn’t love you at all or take care of you, and that you were a slave!” Charlie chuckled a little, and Ruby smiled. “Yes that is a bit exaggerated. My Darcy, you have a wild imagination!”
The whole class laughed, and that helped ease the tension. Mrs. Marigold was able to easily steer the topic back to their school work, and Ruby was grateful for that.
