Charlie rang the doorbell to his house and his mother opened the door. She gasped when she saw Ruby. "Oh my poor dear! What happened?"
"Oh she fell in the lake nearby, and we couldn't get her out until after she fell unconscious. Good thing she had an extra pair of clothing with her," Charlie lied, realizing that he is a better liar than he thought.
"What's going on?" asked Charlie's father, coming into the room.
"The poor girl fell into the lake. My, her body is freezing! Please, make her a cup of tea and some soup while I run some bath water for her. Maybe it will help wake her up. We need to keep her as warm as possible."
Mrs. Baker rushed to warm her body, first by dipping her in hot water and then by dressing her warmly and keeping her in a guestroom covered with many blankets. After a while, her temperature began to rise, until it was almost normal. Since Mr. Baker was a doctor, he said that she should be left alone to rest, and that as long as someone kept checking in on her, she should be fine.
Around midnight, Ruby woke up feeling really cold. She tried to sit up, but her head ached and so did her whole body when she tried to move it. She tried to get her voice to work. "Help!" she hoarsely called. All of a sudden, the lamp next to her lit up, Ruby turned her head to the right, and saw Charlie sitting on a chair, where he had obviously fallen asleep.
"Ruby! You are awake! Oh thank god!" Charlie cried, trying to keep tears from rolling down his face. He got up to give her a mini hug.
"Oh Charlie, you're back. What happened?" Ruby asked.
"Never mind me. What happened to you?" Charlie asked. "Have you been there for three days?"
"I... I don't know," Ruby admitted. Her eyes filled with tears. "I really missed you Charlie. I knew you would save me."
"Of course I would," Charlie told her. "Let me call my mom so she could take care of you." in a minute, he came back with his mom.
"Oh good you are awake," Mrs. Baker said, appearing in her bathrobe. She opened the overhead light on, and asked, "How are you feeling?"
"Really cold. And sore," She replied.
"Okay well your temperature is back to normal, so that is good. Right now, I need you to drink a lot of beverages. Your body is really weak," Mrs. Baker explained. She helped her sit up, and handed her a cup of tea. "Can you manage?"
"Yes, I think I got it," she replied, wrapping her shaking hands around the cup. She slowly took a sip. "Yes that feels really good."
"That's wonderful," Mrs. Baker said, wrapping her arms around Ruby. "Now, after you drink the tea, I want you to eat this bowl of soup and then take these two pills. It will help with the pain. Okay?" Ruby nodded.
