Ruby woke up to the sounds of birds chirping. She opened her eyes and found herself lying in the grass. A strong wind made her shiver, and she realized she was still in her bikini. Then, everything that happened before quickly came back to her. Falling, drowning, and someone coming towards her all flooded her memory. She rapidly sat up and coughed up all the pool water she had swallowed. That helped her feel a little better. She looked around, wondering where her friends went. As she was debating where she should go look for them, the door opened, and Charlie and Meg came running out, Meg with a blanket, and Charlie with a cup. When they saw she was awake, they rushed towards her.
“Ruby!” Meg called out. “Are you okay?”
“I’m…Fine,” She gasped, gratefully accepting the towel Meg handed her and wrapped it around her shoulders.
“I think you need a shower, advised Meg. “It will help remove the smell of the chlorine and warm you up.”
“No no. I don’t need to take a shower. I will be fine,” Ruby said.
“Well at least take this cup of hot chocolate,” Charlie placed the cup into her hands.
“What happened?” Meg asked worriedly. “After you fell, you didn’t come back up.”
Ruby looked embarrassed. “I…I don’t know how to swim.” Then she burst into tears, realizing how close she was to dying.
Meg went over and hugged her. “Don’t feel bad. It’s okay Ruby. You are safe now,” Meg comforted.
“Why didn’t you tell us, Rue? I feel so bad. If you had drowned, it would have been my fault! I’m so sorry!” Charlie chided himself.
“No it’s not your fault Charlie. It’s mine. I should have said something before, but I was too embarrassed,”
Ruby said.
“Well, if it isn’t my fault, then it isn’t your fault either,” Charlie reasoned.
“
It’s starting to get really cold. Maybe I should go change,” Ruby said, standing up.
“Go take a shower first. It will really help,” Meg recommended.
“It’s fine. I don’t really need a shower,” Ruby argued.
“No Ruby. I know you are just saying that without actually meaning it. You are going to take a shower because you want to,” Charlie was firm.
“Okay fine,” Ruby sighed. “You win. I’m going now.”
“Feel free to take anything from my mother’s closet. She won’t miss anything,” Charlie offered. “We will be waiting for you right here when you are done.”
“Okay. Thanks.” With that, she went inside.
