"I hope that everything goes according to plan. Today is the seventh day they are gone, so they should be back maybe today," Ruby said, and Charlie sensed her nervousness. He moved from the floor and sat on the couch next to her.
"Don't worry Ruby. Everything will be fine. What could go wrong?" He assured her.
Meg sat down next to her as well. "Charlie is right. Everything is going to be just-" Meg tried to say, but was interrupted by the doorbell. Ruby jumped, and her heart started pounding strongly. There was only two people who would come this late at night; her stepparents. Charlie put his arm around Ruby and looked at Meg. "Meg, go find out who it is for sure. We will wait here."
Before Meg could leave, their visitor entered the room. "Uncle Ben! What are you doing here?" Ruby asked, as she jumped up and hugged him.
"I just came to check on you. Charlie already offered me to spend the night here, and I accepted," he replied.
"Uncle Ben, you scared Ruby. She thought it was THEM who were coming to take her," Charlie reprimanded him.
"Sorry to scare you," He said as he ruffled her hair. "But even if it was them, I am sure the amazing Charlie would have protected you. That is your boyfriend, right?"
Ruby blushed, and she stared directly at Charlie, who stared back at her, equally embarrassed. "You could say that," She said shyly.
"Oh I don't know, I think he has his eye on Meg," Mr. Baker teased. "They are always teasing each other, you know." This time it was Meg's turn to blush.
"Mom, make him stop! Can we not talk about this please?" he asked.
"But I can already hear the wedding bells in the air!" Mrs. Baker exclaimed. The grownups all laughed, and the children all felt embarrassed.
"Oh leave the poor children alone," Uncle Ben said. "Besides, they need to get to sleep. I have a feeling we need to get up early tomorrow."
"Okay, then I'm going to bed," Charlie announced.
"Well, don't forget to kiss your girlfriend goodnight! Otherwise, she will get really mad at you," Mr. Baker joked.
Charlie buried his face in his hands. "I think I'll pass," he answered, and quickly left the room. Meg followed Charlie's lead. All that was left was Ruby. She hugged her uncle and Charlie's parents before she pursued her two friends.
When she entered her bedroom, she found Meg was already waiting for her. "That was embarrassing," Ruby said.
"I guess grownups will never change," Meg agreed. The two girls quickly changed into their PJs and then crawled into bed. Just then, there was a knock at the door. Ruby got up and opened it, finding Charlie waiting behind it.
"Sorry about my parents," Charlie said, his eyes on the ground.
"Oh it's okay. I understand," Ruby said.
"Well, I guess I should go to sleep. We do have a big day," Charlie said.
"That's true. Goodnight," She said.
"Goodnight," he told her as he looked up. Quickly, he kissed her cheek, and then whispered, "Sweet dreams." Then, just like that, he left. Ruby slowly went back to bed, excited for tomorrow and yet a little nervous.
