chapter 19

 "So, what do you guys want to do?" Charlie asked once they got home and had finished eating lunch.

"I don't know," Ruby said.

"How about a game of basketball?" suggested Meg.

"No basketball," Charlie said. "Besides, Ruby doesn't even know how to play."

"I don't mind," Ruby replied. "Just play one round, since you guys have both been training so hard."

"Are you sure?" Charlie asked.

"Yes. Now go and beat Meg."

"Okay Meg, you're on."

The three raced to the basketball court, and Charlie and Meg stood on either side, with Ruby in the middle. "Ready guys? First person to score three goals wins." She threw the ball to them, and then quickly sat aside to watch. As Meg stole the ball from Charlie, Ruby couldn't help but feel a sense of ease. Her uncle was going to make everything better. She had faith in him. She just hoped everything would go according to plan. She didn't want any surprises.

Within ten minutes, the game had ended with different results. Charlie got three goals and Meg got one.

"Well Charlie, you finally beat me," congratulated Meg, her eyes twinkling. Through his happiness, he did not notice the wink Meg snuck to Ruby. Nor did he notice the twinkle in Ruby's eyes as she congratulated him. He eagerly followed his friends inside and modestly listened as they bragged to his father about his great win. 'I could get used to this,' he thought. When Charlie turned his back, Mr. Baker went to Meg

"You let him win didn't you?" He whispered in her ear. Meg chuckled and put her finger to her lips.

"This calls for a celebration," Charlie announced. "Let's watch a movie, and eat snacks!"

"What do you guys want to watch?" Ruby asked.

"I know this great movie called My Girl," Meg said.

"Sounds good. Let's watch it," Ruby said. "Meg and I can go set it up in your movie theater."

"And I will bring the snacks!" Charlie happily exclaimed.

"Of course, we mustn't forget the food," Meg teased, but Charlie was too happy to notice. They quickly went the theater, and watched the movie. They all agreed it was so good that they just had to watch the second one. After the second one finished, dinner was ready. They all rushed to wash up and then went to dinner.

"This is very good Mrs. B," Meg said. "Your cooking is amazing."

"Thank you Meg," She said. "I wish I was appreciated like this all the time."

"You should be," Ruby said. "Thank you for everything. I really appreciate it."

"You're very welcome," Mr. Baker said with a smile.

"So what did you guys do while we were gone?" Mr. Baker asked.

"You were gone?" Charlie asked.

"Yes. They went to do some errands remember?" Ruby reminded him.

"No. he was too busy preparing the snacks!" Meg giggled. "Look at that boy eat. It's a miracle he is still so skinny!"

Everyone laughed at that, and Charlie flicked a pea at her. "Anyway, we watched two movies. My Girl 1 and 2," Ruby answered.

"Oh that was really nice. I watched it as well when I was younger," Mrs. Baker recalled.

"Mom, dad, we almost forgot! We need to tell you about where we went today," Charlie said.

"Oh that's right!" Meg said. "Ruby, you do the honors."

"Okay, if you insist. Well, we went to the park and over there, we met my uncle," Ruby said. "He didn't live here in Estonia, so he just found out about me. Our plan is that after I go home with the devils- I mean my stepparents, my uncle and Meg and Charlie will go to my house. There, they will videotape them, and then call the police," Ruby summarized.

"The devils? You children are so funny!" Mr. Baker chuckled.

"That sounds like a great plan. Good luck," Mrs. Baker wished them.

"Mrs. Baker, do you want me to do something for you?" Ruby asked.

"No, no dear. I got it," Mrs. Baker said with a smile.

"Then may I please be excused?" She asked politely, and Meg did the same.

"Yes you may," Mr. Baker excused them. Charlie got up without waiting to be excused, but he did move his dishes to the sink. Then, the three went up to Charlie's bedroom.

"It's getting pretty late. Is anyone tired?" Meg asked.

"A little," Ruby admitted.

"We can't go to sleep yet!" Charlie stopped them. "I have to tell a scary story first."

"Great. I love scary stories," Meg said.

"And I love a good scare," Ruby added. She propped up Charlie's pillow behind her and then leaned against the wall. Meg scooted over and sat next to her, and Charlie sat facing them.

"Great. You will love this one. There was once a married couple going to an old hotel. When they were checking in, the man working there told them that a girl used to have their room. She was a dancing ballerina, and she was blind in one eye. Some people say that she haunts their room. When the couple went up to their room, they heard music inside. The man looked through the peep hole, and he saw a dancing ballerina. He told his wife what he saw, so she looked in too, but all she saw was a red, glowing light. The couple told the man what they saw, and he told them that the light was the blind eye of the dancing ballerina, staring at her."

Ruby shuddered and looked at Charlie pleadingly. "Protect me Charlie! I'm too afraid to leave without you!"

"Don't worry, I'll protect you," Charlie said as he lunged for her. As he was doing so, he accidently rolled off the bed, and everyone laughed.

"My hero," Ruby said with a chuckle.

"Anyway guys, we should probably go to sleep now," Meg said, as she got off of the bed.

"Why are you such a party pooper? Are you scared?" Charlie teased her, and she gave him a look that sent Ruby into another fit of giggles. Then, Ruby joined Meg and they both said goodnight to Charlie. They walked back to their room, unaware of Charlie sitting in his room quietly, afraid to sleep in the room all alone.
