The next morning, I woke without James next to me. The sound of the TV came first and then the smell of bacon. I got out of bed and walked to the bedroom door, leaning on the frame looking into the main living area.
James was in the kitchen, back to me, with no shirt on. From here I could see the scaring where his metal arm joined his shoulder. It was weird yet so beautiful. How technology was able to create him a bionic arm and he can use it like a normal one. Interesting.
James turned round and finally noticed me. He looked me up and down before clearing his throat and looking away, blushing slightly. "Morning."
"Morning." I smiled, a little confused by the reaction. "You OK?"
He nodded, not looking up from the plates in front of him. "Yeah. We're, err, we're gonna get Sam and head .... erm, figure this out. So erm, if you wanna eat and get dressed..."
And then it clicked why he wasn't looking. I looked down realising I only had one of his shirts on, unlike last night where the sheet covered most of me. "Shit." I mumbled, "sorry. I'll get dressed now." I turned to go back into his room but stopped for a second, "do you have a spare towel? Just so I can refresh."
"Top shelf. Wardrobe."
"Thanks."
I walked back into the bedroom and grabbed the towel, moving into the bathroom and locking the door. I leaned back against the door and slid down. I thought about James in the kitchen, topless and cooking. He looked amazing. His muscles flexing as he put food on plates and his broad shoulders.... when he turned round, seeing his lips and remembering the kiss. I touched my lips, feeling that kiss again down to my toes.
"Oh my God, no." I whispered to myself. "No. No, it's weird." I stood up and turned the shower on. "So weird. So weird." I kept mumbling to myself as I stripped off and got in the shower. "He's 106 ... but he doesn't look it ... if he continued with his life, he'd be a grandad too. Like yours. His best friend.... but grandpa isn't around.... shut up!"
I continued with my internal argument as I washed, dried and got dressed. I walked back into the main room and James was now sat at the breakfast bar eating, a place was set for me.
I pulled the sleeves of my top down over my hands out of sheer awkwardness and walked over, sitting next to him. "Thanks for the shirt last night. I'll take it home and wash it -"
"It's fine. I'm a big boy, I can wash a shirt." He laughed eating his eggs.
"OK." I whispered and went to my breakfast; eggs, bacon and sausages.
We got into the car and started driving off to my place to meet Sam. We had been driving for half an hour and James still hadn't said a word to me.
"James, are we gonna talk about -" I started to ask but then there was a thump on the roof, "what the hell was that?"
James stuck his head out the window and looked up, "shit." He came back in, threw his phone at me and pulled himself out the window, "call Sam and keep driving. Do not stop!" He shouted back in before climbing on top.
"Oh my God." I sighed and dialled Sam, putting him on speaker. "Sam, think something's happening."
"I'm not far behind. Keep going, don't stop. Don't slow down." He spoke through the phone as I saw James and whoever it was on top of my car jump off and onto a passing lorry.
"But Sam -"
"Keep going!"
The lorry stayed behind me as I put my foot down, it kept up well. Through my rear view mirror I watched the fight unfold.
"I feel like I should be doing something!" I shouted to Sam down the phone.
"You keep going." Sam replied, grunting and a load of other sounds came through along with it. "We're doing - what the hell!?"
I looked up through the mirror and a helicopter had arrived. "Who the hell is that!?" I shouted as someone came out. "Oh God, no." I more mumbled to myself than to anyone else as I saw the shield.
My heart quickened and my mouth went dry. This guy started fighting, helping Sam and James thankfully, but seeing that shield brought back too many feelings. Grandpa would be so upset that Sam didn't take the shield. I understood why he didn't; I didn't agree with it though. He deserved that shield.
I looked up to everyone on top of the lorry, but I couldn't see James. "Sam, where's James!?"
"Who?"
"Bucky!"
"Oh shit!" Sam shouted before I saw him fly off top, down and scoop James up and away from the road. "Ow. We're OK. You?"
"Yeah." I and took a quick right turn, the lorry unable to keep up and the people on top carrying on straight with it. "They've gone. It's not far now."
"We'll see you there." Sam clicked off and the phone hung up.
I slowed down as the road became twisty getting to my own home.
