The house was pitch black with only a dim light coming for the kitchen. Ms. Y/L/N sat on the kitchen island with a glass of wine in one hand and a letter in the other. As she reads the words that filled the pages, she cried. Not from happiness or pain or sorrow but the feeling of uselessness and failure.
"Mom?" young Y/n asked as she descended out of the darkness of the stairs.
"Y/n!" Ms. Y/L/N said startled and wiped the tears out of her eyes.
"What's wrong?" y/n asked.
"It's nothing." she assured her daughter.
"If I'm smart enough to build a lab that can withstand 100 times the damage of a bombing, I'm pretty sure I'm smart enough to know when you're lying." y/n said.
"You are so smart aren't you?" her mom laughed and kissed the little girl's head making the tears stream down more violently. "Y/n? Can you promise me something?"
"Anything for you Mom, you know that." y/n said and a reassuring smile painted on her face.
"Promise me when I'm gone-"
"Gone? What are you talking about?" y/n argued tears starting to form in her eyes as well.
"Y/n please, just promise me that when I'm gone, that you'll take care of your brother and take good care of Bailey."
"No, you're not going anywhere. Mom, what's going on?" y/n cried.
"Please, y/n you have to promise me." the muscles in her face were no longer able to keep the tears back.
"I-I promise! Now tell me what's going on!" y/n demanded. Before her mother could answer a gunshot sounded from upstairs. Y/n and her mother whipped their heads at the ceiling before quickly running up the stairs and into Seth's bedroom where the noise came from.
The small lamp on a nightstand by his bed glowed, showing the dark red blood dripping from the bed and the 17 year old boy groaning as he held his side. A dark figure in the corner dressed in all black with an eyepatch.
"Mom! Y/n! Get out of here!" Seth screamed from his bed. Ms. Y/L/N threw y/n's small body backwards and she tumbled down the stairs. She didn't get badly hurt, just a bit of rug burn. As she landed on the last step two gunshot rang though the house and a big thud followed.
"No!" y/n yelled as she ran back up the stairs. Bailey burst out of his and y/n's bedroom with confusion and fear plastered on his face. Y/n ran into the room but came to a hurried stop when she saw her mother's lifeless body in the doorway. "No, no, what did you do?!
"What I had to." Fury said and walked by the ten-year old draped over her mother's body, she looked over to the bed and her brother's body lay there, eyes wide and lifeless and a stream of blood flowing until it connected with their mother's.
"I am Groot?" Bailey asked when he saw the bodies, tears forming within him.
"Fury?" y/n asked as she stood up and faced him. He stopped in front of the stairs and turned back to look at her. "Did you ever love her?" she asked. He didn't reply, he just looked down at the floor sadly.
"Did you care for any of us? Do you care for anyone or anything other than your work?!" she asked hatred filling her every word as she talked.
"Yes." he replied and looked her directly in the eye.
"Then, why?" she asked.
He hesitated, "You'd never understand and no kid should know."
"No one my age should have to witness her families deaths or be able to say they've almost died trying to save 20 men from a off-shore, highly secured facility by themselves and it be true. Now tell me why you just fucking killed my mother and brother! Because if you can't you should just kill me too." she said.
"I am Groot!" Bailey protested.
"I can't tell you and I'm not going to kill you." Fury said and left her and Bailey there with the bodies of their brother and mother. Bailey may be a creature from space but he's still part of their family. A family that is no longer as big and full of life as it used to be.
2 years later...
"I know now, why you had to do it," y/n said to Fury. "I get it, it wasn't easy for you to do and it wasn't easy to get over. If you ever really get over that kind of thing."
"Where's Bailey?" he asked the now 12 year old girl.
"He didn't make it." she said the trapped tears escaping as she revealed the plant pot she had been hiding behind her back. The pot held mostly dirt, with a few clovers and tiny tulips forming on the sides and in the middle stood, a foot tall stick that was looked as though it had a face.
"I'm sorry." he said.
"No, not really but that's okay, I don't need or want you to feel sorry. I just came to tell you that I forgive you and that I am willing to come back and work for you but I'm going into hiding. The only time you are to call me is when there is a threat bigger then you can handle, understood?" she explained. The man nodded and she walked out of the secret base with the plant pot in one hand and a black duffel bag in the other.
It was difficult for the girl to just walk away but it's all she could do. She had failed at keeping her mother's dying wish, to protect her brothers. She felt she deserved and needed isolation for a while. And that's what she did for 4 years until there was trouble.
Trouble once again caused by Fury.
