Hi! This one shot is based on a comic I saw, but I can't find it anymore :(

This takes place during season 2, but Varian tagged along!

Anyways, Enjoy!

-A conversation-

"And it turns out he was the duke all along!" A young boy explained to a slightly older woman. It was a sunny day, and both decided they could use a break from the others, so they said they were going to collect firewood. Eugene, Lance and Hookfoot were having a silly contest who was the strongest.

"The bear? Oh man, I would've killed to see the look on the King's face..." Cassandra laughed. They arrived at a beautiful shiny blue river with a tree trunk across it in width. The alchemist kicked off his shoes and climbed on the trunk. Cass her boots were a bit more complicated to untie, so she sat down on one knee to take them off.

"Ahhh, this is nice," Varian said as he took in a large breath of fresh air and sat down, the tip of his toes just touching the water. "As much as I like to spend time with the others, sometimes it's nice to take a liiittle extra time finding firewood, you know?"

"I hear ya, Var," Cassandra answered while stepping on the trunk herself. "I can only take so much witty banter before getting a migraine."

"Oh, hush! You like the sparring as much as any of them."

The woman sat down next to the boy, pulling out her sword high in the air, admiring it.

"Ha! Let's see how they do when it comes to the real thing," she smirked and putted her weapon back on her back. "Sure like to shut Eugene up for a second..."

"Aw, Cass, he's really not that bad!" Varian exclaimed while Cass rolled her eyes. "...Most of the time, that is."

Although she didn't let it show, the short haired woman felt a pang in her heart when she heard he didn't call her Cassie anymore. He stopped doing that when he got together with Faith, a servant maid of the castle.

"Varian... don't take this the wrong way, but what do you see in her anyway?" She asked with an eyebrow raised. The alchemist immediately knew who Cass was talking about, and smiled at the thought of his girlfriend.

"Well... she's actually really brave, for one. And she can be really sweet! And although I don't know her for that long, she's always been there for me," he said, while daydreaming. Cassandra sighed, going unnoticed by the boy next to her, thinking that those things fitted her as well.

"I feel like whatever I'm doing, I want her there, you know?" He said, turning his head to look at Cassandra. She gave him a forced smile, but the boy, again, didn't notice that it was. "Well... most of the time."

"I mean, not that she wasn't a great help in the castle, but you are still young. Don't you deserve to, I don't know, live? Find out who you are in the world, without a 'Princess Charming'?"

"Oh, Cass," the raven boy sighed while placing a gloved hand on hers. "We can't control who we fall in love with, you know that."

The girl's eyes widened as she stared at their hands, but quickly came to her senses and smiled at him.

"Yeah," she sighed and pulled her hand away. "Yeah, I know."

The two sat in silence for a minute or two, until Cassandra spoke.

"Ugh," she groaned. "We'd better get back before the boys hurt themselves."

Varian smirked. "I think I've got a better idea."

Before the confused woman could say something else, he jumped into the river, pulling Cassandra with him. With a splash, they both fell in the water.

When she emerged back at the surface she looked at her soaked clothes, then back at the boy. He burst out in laughter, and soon Cass joined, too.

They played and laughed for a while, splashing each other with water. The afternoon turned into evening, and the pair emerged from the water, soaking wet. They sat down on the grass, Varian taking of his vest to let it dry.

"Wait, Var, won't that take like forever to dry?" Cassandra asked.

"Oh, darn! What was I thinking?" The alchemist said, pretending to look like he forgot something really important. He laid down on the green grass and Cass laid down next to him, both watching the sunset.

Now, the sobs of a blue haired girl could be heard through the room of her self made tower as she recalled the memories of that beautiful summer day, of him. She sat down on her throne and placed her head in her hands as more tears streamed down her face.

"Oh Cass," the alchemist's words echoed through her mind. "We can't control who we fall in love with."

"You know that."
