"You should head back", the blue haired woman said, not looking the boy in the eyes. They had sat there in the destroyed throne room for what felt like an eternity, not exchanging a word. But they were both okay with that.
Varian sighed. He did not want to leave her alone in this state. But he knew she was right, soon Eugene and the rest will start to get worried why he hadn't returned yet.
He stood up and extended his hand to Cassandra. She grabbed it and the alchemist pulled her up.
"So, what are you gonna do next?" He asked, hesitant to bring up the subject, but deciding it's for the best.
"I... don't know yet," she replied, "I'll figure it out. Don't worry."
He nodded, knowing Cass was a strong and smart woman and would be able to figure it out on her own. When she attacked Corona, he was afraid that he lost her forever. But it was kind of relief when he saw that she honestly was sorry for her actions.
She ruffled the boy's hair and chuckled, "Geez, V, since when have you gotten so serious?"
He tried, without success, to fix his hair, "Hehe, since I'm trying to help the girl I love."
As soon as those words left his mouth, a dark shade of red spread across his cheeck, "W-well I uhm-"
His rambling was interrupted by small, soft lips being pressed gently against his. After a few seconds he kissed her back. Cassandra cupped his freckled face. Then her hands moved from his face to his neck, and she pulled him closer. His hands found their way to her waist. His heart was beating fast.
After a while they pulled away, both out of breath. Cass gave him one last kiss on his head and ruffled his hair again.
"Be safe, kid."
"Hey! I thought you didn't call me that!" He exclaimed, feeling kind of dizzy from the kiss.
"Well, guess I changed my mind then", she shrugged. He laughed and started running towards the door, knowing he should hurry or they would get suspicious.
The boy turned to look at Cassandra one last time before he left, not knowing how long it would be before they saw each other again. She nodded at him, and he nodded back before breaking back into a run.
Cass stared at the place where she last saw him. It was true, he had matured a lot in a short period of time. Perhaps that's why she only now showed interest in him.
She looked away from the doors and sighed. Now there were more important things to handle than love.

Varian arrived at the Snuggly Duckling, completely out of breath. He snuck in and went straight to Rapunzel to see how she was doing. Around her bed stood a lot of people, asking how she was feeling. That must mean she's awake.
He pushed away a few people to get to her bed.
"Varian!" Rapunzel said when she saw the boy, "W-what's happening? Where am I? Where's Eugene?"
Lance's booming voice could be heard above the talking, "Alright, folks, let the princess have some space to breath."
"What do you mean?" Varian asked, the feeling of worry and guilt spreading in his stomach, "I-Isn't he here yet?"
"I'm afraid not, kid", Lance spoke from behind him, looking anxiously out of the window.
"What?" Rapunzel said, panicking, "Why isn't he here? What happened to Cassandra? Why aren't we in Corona?"
Lance and Varian glanced at each other and the boy cleared his throat, "Rapunzel, I really don't think you should-"
But she jumped out of her bed and ran outside.
"Wait!" Lance and Varian shouted at the same time and ran after her. They found her outside, staring at Corona, which was now covered and destroyed with black rocks.
When she heard the footsteps of the boys approaching, she turned around, a tear streaming down her face.
"I-is Eugene still out there?" She asked in a shaky voice, glancing at Corona.
"I- We...we don't know", Varian sighed, "But we'll find him, princess."
They stood there for a few seconds, silent, when suddenly Rapunzel started walking down the hill.
"What are you doing?" The raven haired boy asked while running to catch up with her.
"I'm going to find him myself. And if I find out that he is hurt and that Cassandra is responsible for that," she cracked her knuckles,"then she won't be seeing the end of the day."
Lance stood in front of her, which forced her to stop walking.
"Princess, please, you're not thinking clearly", he said.
"Lance, how can you say that?" Rapunzel said, "He is your best friend! Aren't you worried that he, I don't know, may be dead?!"
The former thief was taken aback by those words.
Rapunzel's face softened,"Oh, Lance, I'm sorry, I shouldn't have," she sniffed,"I am just so scared. I just lost my kingdom, my best friend a-and-"
"That's not true, princess," Varian said,"We may not have them now, but that doesn't mean we can't get them back."
"He's right," Lance said,"Now let's head back inside and make a real plan there."
Rapunzel managed to get a small smile on her face. She wiped her tears away and nodded. She hooked her arms with the two boys and walked back towards the Snuggly Duckling.
While Lance and Rapunzel were talking, Varian's mind was racing. He couldn't help but feel guilt. He knew that Eugene was weak at the moment, but still he let him go alone. Who knows what happened...
