LUKE'S POV

At the beginning of the car ride everyone was talking. Daniel wouldn't tell us where we were going, just that we had to make a stop along the way. We fired questions hoping one of them would crack, but they never did. Eventually the conversation divided. Mom talked to Daniel, and I talked to Kaytlin.

It seemed our conversation was awkward small talk at first. After a while she got on her phone. Just to be annoying I sent her a text. Instead of glaring at me or ignoring it, like Bridget did, Kaytlin got excited and messaged me back.

"What are you grinning at?" Daniel glanced at his daughter through the rearview mirror. Kaytlin bit her lip trying to hide her expression, but that was a fail.

"Nothing," she lied, trying hard to stop grinning, "my friend's just messaging me."

From then on we talked through text. Occasionally chatting verbally about something completely different then what we were sending back and forth. Making sure to keep Daniel and Liz in a small loop without actually keeping them in the loop.

Two hours in and mom dozed off. Me and Kaytlin were playing one of the many games I had downloaded on her phone. Games turned into a movie, and then Kaytlin fell asleep with her head on my shoulder.

"She looks peaceful," Daniel commented, getting my attention.

"Yeah," I caught myself smiling at her like an idiot. I had to focus on something else! Changing the subject seemed to be the best option, "she's excited about this trip."

"She always is. You should have seen her running around in her pigtails! Adorable," he trailed off, "I think her young excitement always made the trips better. Especially for Bradly. She'd bring out his childish side."

I couldn't picture Bradly acting childish. Sure he could be some fun, but he was always serious. Then again I was completely convinced Kaytlin could make anyone happy. She always made me feel better at least.

"She said you guys went to Disney world. That sounds cool. We never really took trips like that. We just kinda did things around Sydney," Daniel made me miss my dad. Sometimes I wonder what he's doing, where he is, if he misses me? Even when him and mom were married he never did anything like this. If we went somewhere he stayed home.

"They all seemed to like that one. If that's something you're interested in, me and Liz could take you and your brothers there," I appreciated Daniel's offer. I may take him up on it one day, but only if Kaytlin comes.

"We almost there?" Mom woke up. She yawned, fixing her hair in the mirror. She looked back at me, winking, smiling at Kaytlin's sleeping figure.

"A few more hours. We need gas," Daniel took a hard turn into a gas station. Accidentally hitting a bump, and Kaytlin fell face first into my lap.

"Sorry hun," he apologized, getting out of the car. Liz followed him, heading inside.

"Where are we?" Kaytlin's voice was raspy. She shook her head in an attempt to wake herself up. I wasn't sure if it worked, but she rolled over and hid her face in my lap.

"I don't know," I lifted her head letting her use my hoodie as a pillow.

"I'm sorry I fell asleep on you,"a tiny, tired smile crept onto her face, "literally."
