"Derek Cristopher Shepherd!" He heard a voice call out behind him.

Oh no. He stopped dead in his tracks. She couldn't be here. There was no way she would just show up here without warning. He slowly turned around to see his mother glaring at him.

"Ma!" He said with a fake wide smile. He was happy to see her and he missed her, but he wasn't ready to go back to his old world. Also he was not excited to see his mother's reaction to him impregnating a girl and not telling her about it for twenty weeks.

"What did you do to your sister?" She asked in a stern tone.

"What do you mean?" He asked confusedly.

"Amelia came back from here a mess. She refuses to talk to anyone about it and I am assuming it has something to do with you." She said pointedly.

"Ma, that's really between me and Amy." He responded. That was a mistake. He knew it was a mistake the second the words left his mouth.

"Between you and Amelia? Really? So I raised five kids, on my own and this is what I get? You leave, refuse to answer my phone calls, are separated from your wife, barely talk to your best friend." She went on.

"Ma. I was going through a lot. My wife cheated on me." He sighed.

"And that means you couldn't call me?" She asked.

"Yes."

"Hmm." She sighed. "Well I am here now and I dare you to try and not talk to me now."

"I wouldn't dream of it." He gave his best charming smile. His mother generally saw through it but it was worth a shot.

"So how are you doing now?" She asked.

"I'm good..." He trailed off as he saw Meredith turn the corner and start walking towards them. He widened his eyes and shook his head at her as a signal for her to not come this way, but his mission failed.

"Derek." Meredith said as she joined them, "Sorry for interrupting." She turned to his mother then back as him. "Can I get a word with you when you have a second."

"Um- Sure. I'll text you when I get a second." He responded awkwardly

"Derek dear, where are your manors, introduce me to your friend." His mother said warmly.

"Um- Mother, this is Meredith, Mer this is my mother." He gestured at the two of them.

"Oh-" Meredith's eyes widened. "Nice to meet you."

"Nice to meet you too dear." She reached out her hand to shake Meredith's. "You are friends with Derek?"

"Ma, actually." He breathed. This was not going to go well. "She is my girlfriend." He smiled at Meredith.

"Girlfriend?" His mother said, eyeing Meredith's obvious baby bump.

"Yes Ma." He said.

"I didn't realize you were divorced with Addison yet." She said carefully.

"We are separated and I have filed. I am just waiting for her to sign the papers." He responded.

"Okay." She said pointedly. "Meredith, please excuse my rudeness, but I don't want to continue this conversation avoiding the elephant in the room. You are pregnant, right?" She asked.

"I am." Meredith said with a small smile on her face.

"And the father is?"

"Me." Derek answered.

"Are you two planning on getting married when the divorce is finalized?" She asked and both Derek and Meredith's eyes went wide.

"I -um" Meredith stammered.

"There isn't a plan for that yet." He answered.

"But you are having a child together." His mother said.

"Yes, but I am not going to marry her just because we are having a child. I do see myself marrying her at a point." He eyed Meredith. "But I want that point to be because we both want to spent the rest of our lives together. I don't plan on having two failed marriages."

"Hmm." His mother said. She had the look on her face that he knew very well. The look of deciding whether or not he was in trouble. "And if you don't end up marrying each other?" She asked inquisitively.

"We didn't start dating until a little bit into my pregnancy." Meredith added. "We were planning on co-parenting then, so if it doesn't work out, we will go back to our original plan of split custody."

"I- fine." His mother sighed. "The three of us will be getting dinner tonight. But in the mean time I am going back to the hotel to rest." She said and then walked away.

Derek turned to Meredith. "I am so sorry."

Meredith slapped him lightly on the arm. "Why didn't you tell me your mother was coming?!"

"I didn't know! She just showed up!"

"And told us we have to get married." Meredith hissed.

"I am sorry." He said.

"It's- it's fine." Meredith grumbled. "Can I lie and say I have work tonight?"

"You can but please don't. It will be better if she got to see how great you are."

"Mother's don't like me. They don't think I am great. They think I am the slutty intern who get their son to live in sin with them" Meredith snapped.

"She will love you." He said placing his hand on her shoulder. "I can't think of a reason why she wouldn't."

"Really." She said dryly. "You, REALLY, can't think of a reason why she wouldn't like me?"

"Not once she get's to know you." He said firmly.

"Fine." She said. "But you are making it up to me."

"Thank you." He said quickly before kissing her temple lightly.
