It had been a few weeks since Derek's mother had left, and honestly, Meredith was stressed. There were a million things to deal with, half of them she didn't even know would come. She was a doctor and figured that she knew what would come with being pregnant, but finding out that at twenty-three weeks, your gums may start to bleed really threw her for a loop. So she spent her days walking around with a baby that was now measured in pounds, bleeding gum, swollen ankles, and few other, grosser symptoms that she tried not to think about.
Not only did she have to deal with the pregnancy symptoms, but she had to get ready for the baby. A baby that she will have to manage to take care of while going through her residency. Her maternity leave was 6 weeks, and right after she gets back, she will have to take her intern exam. So she will be missing 6 weeks of surgery. 6 very important weeks of surgery. Derek definitely made it easier. He decided to take 6 weeks of maternity leave and promised to help her study for her exam. Derek also has already decided that the baby will follow in it's parents footsteps and become a surgeon. So ever since the pregnancy had hit the point where the baby could hear, Derek has been describing his most interesting surgeries to her belly. Which Meredith thought he probably was doing for her benefit as well. There was just so much to do before the baby was born that it was driving her a bit crazy.
And what definitely wasn't helping was the whispering. Why did everyone in the hospital give such a damn about her life? She wasn't getting special treatment, even though at this point she wished she was. A lot of the residents and attendings treated her like she was an idiot. Just because she maybe can admit that birth control isn't her forte, that doesn't change the fact that she is damn good at her job. She can do just as much as anyone else, if fact, she could probably do more than half the idiots in this program.
"Did you hear she was put on another neuro case? God I should have let an attending impregnate me." She heard someone say in the locker room. That was the thing she couldn't wrap her head around. The jealousy. Yes, she was on a lot of neuro cases, but she had very clearly worked for every case she was put on. She did extra research and always made sure she was the most prepared. But she also was barely ever put on a case outside of neuro. All the other attendings and residents all but refused to work with her, because of the combination stereotype of the intern sleeping with the attending and the pregnant intern. Meredith loved Derek and her baby more than anything but some days she just wanted to be a normal intern.
"Dr. McDreamy can favor her all he wants and they can't do anything about it. It's not like they can fire her, because she can sue them saying it was because she was pregnant. And they aren't going to fire him because he I the neuro god." She felt her blood boil.
"That's it." She yelled as she slammed her locker shut. "I am sick of this! What the hell is up with all of your petty jealousy? Do you guys actually want to become the pregnant intern? Trust me, it's not as fun as it looks. I am tired all the god damn time, because I am running labs and doing scut all day. Then, at night, I study neuro cases because god knows, I have to work twice as hard as any of you to be picked for a surgery. Because no one wants to fucking work with the pregnant intern. Then I have to deal with the gossip and the judgement. My boyfriend is my boss. Get over it. It's not of your god damn business." Once she was done with her tirade, she looked around at the silent still faces around her. She shouldn't have done that. She grabbed her pager and stomped out of the locker room.
