Chapter 12: A Leap of Faith
The four girls gathered up the little gear they had with them.
“How are we going to get off a moving train?” Melanie asked, looking out of the window.
“What do we have powers for?” Aimee asked, before fading out.
“Good point,” Alice agreed, starting to shimmer.
“That’s all very good for you two, but that doesn’t answer how Hazel and I are going to get off,” Melanie replied.
“We’ll have to jump,” Hazel said.
“I’ll watch from outside,” Alice said, turning into a bird and flying out an open window.
Hazel and Melanie left the compartment.
They were walking down the hallway, when they heard someone behind them shout.
“There they are!”
Hazel spun around to see two Collective operatives advancing quickly towards them from the other end of the carriage.
“Run!” Melanie shouted, and the two girls set off.
They sprinted down the hallway and over the gaps between carriages.
The two men had also starting running and were catching up fast.
Melanie and Hazel kept moving. They bolted through carriage after carriage, trying to lose the men.
Hazel threw open the door at the end of another carriage and the two went through.
This time they found themselves looking out onto the track. They had reached the end of the train.
Hazel looked back through the door into the carriage behind them to see the men only metres away.
While pondering what to do, Melanie exclaimed, “Go up!”
A ladder hung on the wall.
Quickly, the two girls climbed up the ladder and stood on top of the train. The men came up only seconds after them.
Hazel and Melanie started to run across the roof when Melanie exclaimed, causing Hazel to turn.
One of the men had caught up to them, and was holding onto Melanie’s arm.
“Go Hazel!” Melanie shouted.
Suddenly an invisible force came from nowhere, hitting the man in the face, causing him to stagger, and let go of Melanie’s arm.
Aimee appeared, with a large smile across her face.
“I’ve always wanted to do that,” she said.
“Aimee!” Melanie yelled.
Aimee turned around and faded out again just before the second man grabbed her from behind.
The other man had recovered and was advancing again.
The train crossed a bridge and Hazel looked down to see a river flowing steadily under them.
“Jump now!” Hazel heard Aimee’s voice shout. “I can hold these two off.”
Melanie and Hazel obeyed and leapt from the train, starting the plummet towards the water below.
The two girls fell for, what seemed to Hazel, an eternity.
The water came up to meet them and Hazel was submerged in the freezing blackness that was the river.
