Chapter 18: The Dogs

“Run!” Hazel heard Aimee shout behind her.

Hazel felt someone’s hand slip into hers and she was pulled along behind them.

The dogs were gaining on them. Hazel could hear the barks loudly in her ears.

Hazel turned to see Alice smiling at her, urging her to keep going.

“Try and lose them in the forest!” Conrad shouted.

The group of teenagers ran into the forest, dodging branches and swerving around trees.

They could still hear the barking.

Hazel’s thighs were burning and she could feel blood rushing to her cheeks. Her headache was just getting worse. How had Mercedi found her? At least the jabs of pain had stopped hitting her.

The group were sprinting at this point, running for their lives.

One of the dogs caught up to Hazel. It jumped up and caught hold of her jacket. Hazel screamed and pulled her jacket away, ripping it out of the dog’s mouth. Hazel fell backwards.

Alice was beside her, getting her back to her feet.

“Go Hazel!” she shouted.

Hazel was reluctant to go. She turned to run, expecting Alice to come after her. The others slowed, watching.

Alice changed into a cheetah.

Hazel looked into her sparkling purple eyes.

‘I’ll hold them off. Don’t worry, I’ll be with you again soon.’ she heard Alice think.

‘I’ll be waiting,’ Hazel replied.

She turned and ran, catching up with the others.

They kept running.

Ruby tripped over a rotten log and stumbled onto the ground.

Conrad stopped and took her hand, helping her up.

She gasped, as pain spread up her leg. She must have landed badly on her ankle.

“Can you keep going?” Conrad asked.

Ruby nodded.

“I’ll be fine,” she answered.

Ruby winced as she walked. She leaned on Conrad for support and they followed the others.

The others had slowed down. Everyone was feeling worn out, hungry and thirsty.

“We need food,” Aimee said as they kept on their journey through the forest, “Do we have any left over from earlier?”

“No,” Melanie answered. “and I can’t grow anymore because I need water to make the plants grow. I’m too thirsty to make it work.”

They ambled along.

Conrad stopped walking.

“I know how to get us water. Do you have anything to collect it in?” he asked.

Hazel brought out some coconut shells she had kept in the backpack.

“I thought these might be useful,” she said.

She handed the shells to Conrad.

He gave them to Ruby to hold and raised his hands into the air. A rumble came from the sky and then a torrent of water poured down, landing into the shells Ruby was holding, some splashing over the top.
