Chapter 4: Meeting Melanie
They took a seat. The bus was almost empty except for a man, a woman with two children and a teenage girl, who looked about seventeen or eighteen.
A voice came into Hazel’s head.
‘I hope they don’t find me. I need to get away as soon as possible. Word will spread soon and people will begin to notice.’
She thought it might be Aimee again, but it didn’t sound like Aimee’s voice.
‘Aimee,’ Hazel mind-spoke. ‘was that you talking to me?’
‘No, why?’ Aimee replied.
‘A voice came into my head, like when yours does.’ Hazel said.
‘That’s strange. Was it anyone on this bus?’ Aimee asked.
‘Must have been,’ Hazel said. ‘but only people who have powers come into my head. I’ve worked that much out.’
Hazel stared back out the window.
The bus kept stopping and starting, people kept getting on and off.
Hazel was sleeping when Aimee nudged her, waking her up.
“Our stop’s coming up next,” she said.
The voice came back as the bus pulled over. ‘Oh, this is my stop.’
Aimee and Hazel gathered all their belongings and pushed their bikes off the bus.
One other person got off the bus. The teenage girl.
“Would you be able to give us directions?” Hazel asked her.
“Sure, where do you need to go?” the girl answered.
“Lintoch Drive,” Hazel replied.
“That’s where I’m heading. You can come with me if you like.” the girl volunteered.
“Thanks. By the way, I’m Hazel and this is Aimee,” Hazel said.
“I’m Melanie,” the girl said.
Aimee and Hazel pushed their bikes and followed Melanie down the road.
The three girls caught sight of police in the distance.
The voice started firing thoughts into Hazel’s head.
‘No, no. I can’t be found out, not now. Not when I’m nearly there.’
“Let’s take a different route,” Melanie suggested.
Hazel knew exactly who the voice was now.
Melanie.
Hazel mind-spoke to Aimee. ‘Melanie’s the voice. That means she has powers like us.’
‘Ok, what should we do?’ Aimee asked.
‘Let’s get her to help us and maybe join us. Maybe her power will be useful?’ Hazel answered.
‘But how do we tell her we know?’ Aimee asked.
‘We’ll confront her,’ Hazel decided.
‘Are you sure that’s a good idea?’ Aimee questioned, but Hazel was no longer listening.
By now the group had arrived at where Aimee and Hazel were going to stay.
“Melanie, can we talk to you in private?” Hazel asked.
