Chapter 16: Break In
The sun shone over a new day full of opportunities. The girls hoped one of these opportunities would be getting Ruby’s brother Conrad to safety.
Hazel, Aimee, Alice, Ruby and Melanie stood by the brick wall of the camp. They had packed up camp early, after having a quick breakfast. All were waiting in anticipation for the day’s events to unfold.
“Ready?” Hazel asked Melanie.
“Ready,” Melanie replied.
She bent down and started growing the vine that would take the girls over.
Aimee went through the wall, fading out as she did so.
Soon Aimee came back with a key item in their rescue plan. Camp uniforms.
By this time Melanie’s vine was against the wall, fully grown. Alice, Hazel, Melanie and Ruby quickly changed into the clothing while Aimee walked back through the wall.
Aimee sent the signal, ‘All clear.’
In turn the four girls scaled the wall using the vine. Luckily they were all reasonably small girls so climbing the vine was easy.
They landed on the other side and Melanie made the vine disappear behind them. No-one would know they had ever been there.
Alice changed into someone Melanie’s age and walked further into the camp with Aimee to find out Conrad’s whereabouts.
The other three stayed hidden, not wanting to get caught.

A few minutes later Alice and Aimee re-joined the group and shared the news.
“We found him. He’s in his dorm,” Alice told the others.
“He has until midday,” Aimee added. “That means we do too.”
“How are we going to get him out undetected though? He’s expected at his death meeting and if he doesn’t turn up, they’ll think something’s wrong,” Ruby said.
Thoughtful expressions appeared on most of the girl’s faces. They had forgotten about the guards.
“So how do we get the guards out of the way? Anyone have any ideas?” Hazel asked.
“We should put them all to sleep,” Melanie said. “I did a lot of work with my mum using herbs and medicines and I know a plant that would do nicely. They would have to drink it for it to work though.”
“We’ll slip it in their water supply,” Aimee said. “With all the snooping I’ve done, I noticed that the guards drink out of water bottles that are filled with purified water. They are re-filled regularly throughout the day by a water lady. Why don’t we put it in the water purifier? Then when the guards have a drink, it won’t be purified but…”
“Drugged,” Hazel said, finishing the sentence.
“That’s brilliant,” Ruby exclaimed.
Everyone agreed.
“I’ll get to work then,” Melanie said.

Aimee crept into the control room where the water purifier was, the potion of herbs heating up in her hand.
She had to stay silent because even though she was invisible, noise would attract attention. She was lucky. The room was empty at that moment. If she were caught, their plan would be ruined. She couldn’t let that happen. Conrad’s life was in jeopardy.
Opening the water purifier, Aimee slipped the potion inside and shut it back up again.
The plan was working perfectly.
As Aimee walked back out of the room, she noticed a wall that was almost completely covered in buttons and monitors. Aimee thought nothing of it and slipped out of the room making her way back to the group.
The task was done, now they only had to wait…
