Chapter 2: A new friend

The next day Hazel sat in English class. Hazel put her hand up and excused herself to go to the toilet.

She opened the door and as she walked through, she sensed another person coming through behind her, but when she looked no-one was there.

Hazel carried on to the bathroom, which was situated at the end of the block. She walked through the doorway to see a girl materialize out of no-where.

‘She must be paranormal,’ Hazel thought.

“What…” Hazel began confused.

“Oh no, this is bad. This is really bad,” the girl cried. “I should have been more careful. Please don’t turn me in.”

“Don’t worry, I wouldn’t do that. I’m the last person who would give your secret away,” Hazel reassured the girl.

Hazel looked more closely at the girl and noticed she was the same one from the soccer pitch. Also, come to think of it, she recognised that voice. It was the voice she hadn’t been able to explain on her two previous encounters with it.

“How can I trust you?” the girl asked.

“I’m paranormal too. I wouldn’t turn you in,” Hazel said.

“Prove it,” the girl said.

“Well, right now I can tell you that you are worried about some homework you haven’t done. So you skipped class before anyone would notice,” Hazel said.

“Anyone could guess at that,” the girl replied.

“Ok then. You were just thinking about that chocolate donut in your lunchbox that you want to eat for morning tea.” Hazel said.

“How did you know that?” the girl cried out. “Have you been stalking me or something?”

“In a way. I can see into your mind and read your thoughts when I choose to. Right now I’m trying to prove to you that you can believe me,” Hazel said.

“How? That’s impossible,” the girl interrupted.

“That’s what I’m trying to say,” Hazel said. “I’m paranormal just like you.”

“I guess we can trust each other then,” the girl said. “keep the secret for each other. I didn’t catch your name?”

“Hazel,” Hazel replied, introducing herself.

“Aimee,” the girl said.

They returned to their classes.

***

Aimee was invisible, sitting in the staff workroom, when two teachers came in; Miss Mercedi and Mrs Buska.

“I’m so glad that my brother’s group won the election. We have so many plans,” Miss Mercedi said.

“That’s interesting,” Mrs Buska replied.

“My brother Philip Mercedi has great plans for new order, peace and prosperity for all. We won’t let anyone stand in our way. That is why we have decided to terminate every last person with paranormal abnormality- anyone who could stop us. Once they are gone, my brother plans to take full control of the country. He has powers beyond anyone else,                                                                         so he will find a way to get what he wants. He’s very good at it. Once this country is under The Collective’s reign, we can work on the world. But first, all paranormal must be eliminated. It is in the country’s best interests. We want to have the best future for our world and the paranormal pose as a threat to us all,” Miss Mercedi said.

Aimee sat listening. This was terrible. This couldn’t be happening. A plot to take over the world? All the paranormal killed? Aimee realised that Hazel and herself were in more danger than they had first realised.

***

Hazel sat in the library at morning tea.

‘No, no. This is bad.’

The voice had come back. Hazel stood up quickly. It sounded like Aimee was in trouble.

Hazel focused to find where Aimee was- the staff workroom.

“So after all this happens…” Miss Mercedi was interrupted as Hazel burst into the room.

Aimee materialized beside Hazel, not wanting to leave her new friend to face the teachers alone.

“Oh,” Miss Mercedi said in a negative tone. “What do we have here?”

“Two little spies?” Mrs Buska replied.

“This won’t do. First, you two are in an out of bounds area. Second, you have just listened in on a top secret conversation,” Miss Mercedi said. “You had better come with me.”

Hazel and Aimee were taken over to one of the offices.

“Now,” Miss Mercedi said, sitting the two girls down. “you two have just put your lives in danger. It is unfortunate that you were in the wrong place at the wrong time but that doesn’t matter. What happened happened. However you have just heard something of utmost secrecy. Nobody must hear of this. Excuse us, we need to discuss what we should do with you.”

Miss Buska and Miss Mercedi walked out of the room.

A ‘click’ was heard as the door locked behind them.

“We’ve got to escape,” Hazel said.

“Well, that shouldn’t be too difficult,” Aimee said, as she walked through the wall.

Hazel heard the voice she was acquainted with in her mind saying, ‘The coast is clear. Come on out.’

Hazel concentrated on the door and made an un-locking motion with her hand.

‘Hurry,’ the voice continued. ‘I hear people coming.’

Hazel’s idea had worked. The door clicked and swung open. Hazel was out.
