Chapter 3: On the Run

Aimee faded as Mrs Buska and Miss Mercedi came around the corner. Hazel and Aimee would have to keep a good distance ahead, so as to not be recognised. Hazel surveyed the situation. They were on the 4th floor of the school block and Miss Mercedi and Mrs Buska were getting closer with every passing second.

‘Aimee,’ Hazel mind-spoke to her friend. ‘Can you direct me out of here?’

‘Of course. I happen to know plenty of escape routes,’ Aimee replied. ‘Ok. The first classroom on your left goes through to a staircase.’

Hazel followed Aimee’s directions. She came to a door. It was locked. She repeated the process of unlocking the door. It swung open.

Aimee was right. Out through the classroom was a fire escape staircase winding down the outside of the building. It only went down the next two levels, but that meant that they would avoid the two teachers. Hazel ran down the steps as fast as she could. She could hear Aimee’s feet hitting the metal stairs as she went down in front of Hazel.

They came to the third floor.

Aimee directed Hazel again. ‘Now you are down the stairs, go into the classroom and through into the corridor. Another staircase should be in front of you.’

Again Aimee was correct. Hazel followed the instructions to get down to the next level. They were now on the ground floor. They only had to navigate outside and they would be able to get away faster. Hazel stole a look back the way they had come and saw Miss Mercedi was not that far away. They were going to have to move faster.

Okay,’ Aimee mind-spoke. ‘Now you have to get out, but you will have to pass by the administration office. It’s only morning tea time so we won’t be allowed to leave.’

The corridor they had been running along came to an end and opened out into a foyer.

The administration office was to their left.

A curtain sat open to the side of the window. Hazel brought her hand up and swept the curtain over using her mind. While the people in the office were trying to open it again, Hazel sprinted across the foyer and out the main door.

When she was out, Aimee materialized beside Hazel.

“That went well I think,” Aimee said out loud.

“Easy for you to say, you were invisible. It seems you’ve done that a few times,” Hazel replied.

“Yeah, well… it’s handy to know how to get around any unpleasant situations,” Aimee said.

“We have to keep moving. Miss Mercedi and Mrs Buska were hot on our trail,” Hazel told Aimee.

“What do we do first?” Aimee asked.

“I’m going to go home. We can stop at your house too if you like,” Hazel said.

“Ok, but only shortly. They’ll be looking for us,” Aimee warned.

They ran to Hazel’s house.

Hazel tried the door, it was unlocked. Her mother must be home.

“Mum,” Hazel called into the house. “You there?”

“Hazel?” her mother called back, coming into view. “Why are you home so early from school? Who’s your friend?”

“This is Aimee and we seem to be in a bad situation,” Hazel said.

“What sort of situation?”

“We got in trouble with some teachers at school because we overheard some top secret plans, and now our lives are in some sort of danger. Also, there are people chasing us down because we know some things we shouldn’t,” Hazel said.
