Chapter 15: What to do
Hazel watched as guards took hold of a group of five women and led them away.
One went into hysterics, screaming and thrashing about, trying desperately to get away, but the guard held on firm, lifting her above the ground by her waist.
Another guard pulled something out of his belt and pressed it against the hysterical woman making her body go limp. The others went quietly, shuffling along, looking quite defeated.
One person, in the group left watching, knelt down and closing her eyes, made the sign of the cross, before a guard roughly bumped her back to her feet.
Scanning the group and listening to the voices, Hazel figured out that those selected few were being taken to their deaths. Mercedi had decided he’d had enough of the paranormals, so he was killing them off. Many innocent people had died already.
“What was that all about?” Hazel heard Aimee whisper over her shoulder.
Hazel relayed the information back to Aimee.
She gasped as she took in what Hazel was telling her.
“We had better find Ruby’s brother sooner than later then,” Aimee said.
Hazel and Aimee continued around the camp, the urgency of their search increasing slightly.
One thing Hazel noticed about this camp was that it was divided into two sections, males and females.
The camp they had been at had only held females of a certain age group.
Focusing on one guard, Hazel found that Mercedi had moved all the paranormals from the other camps together into the one camp, because they had been attracting too much un-wanted attention.
Hazel went through all the voices in her head, the voices of the paranormal at this camp. Ruby’s brother would be among them. She tried to find something relating to Ruby or her brother, and if finding nothing she put the voice aside and moved on to the next one.
Finally she found him. Conrad, twin brother of Ruby.

Back in the forest Alice and Ruby sat talking to each other.
“I was wondering how old you are,” Alice said.
“Thirteen going on fourteen,” Ruby replied.
“I hoped you would say that,” Alice said, smiling. “It’ll be nice to have someone my age around.”
“Are you also thirteen?” Ruby asked.
“Yeah,” Alice said.
“How old are the others?” Ruby asked.
“Hazel and Aimee are fifteen, maybe sixteen and Melanie is eighteen,” Alice answered.
“How long have you been on the run?”
“I ran away from home when I was twelve.”
“Where did you go?”
“I changed into a young adult and made a life for myself from there.”
“Didn’t your parents track you down?”
“They might have tried but I don’t know if they did. I don’t think they cared. They were scared of me and thought I was a freak.”
Ruby, seeing this was a sensitive topic, stopped asking questions.
There was a pause in the conversation.
