Chapter 22: For Hazel
It hadn’t been long after Hazel had sent Alice the message that they arrived.
Alice and Ruby had decided they must leave at once. Hazel had been caught by The Collective and there wasn’t any time to waste. Ruby had gone back to her room to get their things- Hazel’s included. The two girls did not plan on coming back. Alice had changed her clothes and was packing her things. Ruby had just left the room when the doctor had come in, followed by two officers.
“What’s going on?” Alice asked.
“It has come to our suspicions that you may have a paranormal abnormality,” one of the officers said.
“Why would you say that?” Alice struggled to keep her voice steady. Could this have happened at a worse time?
One of the officers sensed Alice’s unease towards the situation.
“If we are wrong, you have nothing to fear. Would you come with us please?”
Alice had no choice but to follow. Retreating would only raise more suspicion.
By this point Ruby had made her way back to Alice’s room and was about to enter when the two officers came out- Alice in tow. Alice quickly looked over at Ruby before turning back.
That was all the assurance Ruby needed. She would follow them. Alice was smart enough to find a way out of whatever situation she had found herself in, and when she did, Ruby would be waiting nearby to join her.
Alice was lead out of the hospital and to a police car parked outside. She was directed into the back while the two officers shut the door and climbed into the front. One of the officers shock hands with the doctor before climbing in.
“Thank you for alerting us Sir,” he said.
The front door slammed and the car started to move.
Alice looked out the window. How would she get out of this one? She looked into the front and saw one of the windows was wound down. Now she just had to get out it.

“Stop the car!” one of the officers exclaimed.
The other officer slammed his foot on the brake and pulled to the side of the road.
“What is it?” he asked.
“She’s gone. The girl’s gone.”
“What do you mean? That’s impossible…” His voice trailed off as he looked around the cab, finding it completely empty. “But where did she go?”
In their bewilderment, the police officers didn’t notice a small moth slip out of the window.

Ruby was walking down the footpath in the direction the police car had taken. She couldn’t move as fast as she would have liked to because of her ankle but she was trying. Maybe Alice would just have to find her. She sat down on a bench next to the footpath to rest. She had no clue where she was going.
Unknown to Ruby a moth landed on the grass beside her and started to shimmer and morph.
Ruby got up and was about to walk off when a voice stopped her.
“Going somewhere?” it asked.
Ruby spun around to see Alice leaning against the bench.
“How did you manage to escape so fast?” Ruby asked.
“I have my ways,” Alice replied, tapping her nose knowingly.
“Anyway,” Alice continued. “What are you waiting for? We need to find the others.”
