Chapter 17: The Rescue
Aimee reported back to the group.
“It’s done,” she said.
“If they drink it within the next ten minutes, they’ll be out in an hour,” Melanie said.
Waiting for the guards to all fall asleep was the most agonizing hour of Hazel’s life. Aimee got up every now and then and checked if the potion had worked yet.
Finally she came back with a positive report.
“Every person in the staff buildings and control rooms is knocked out. Most are just lying on the floor. The guards that were standing around the camp are also lying on the ground,” Aimee said.
“They’ll only be out for a couple of hours,” Melanie said. “Let’s get moving.”
The group made their way to Conrad’s dorm and found a boy sitting on one of the dirty bunks.
“Who are you?” he asked them. Ruby made her way to the front of the group.
“Ruby?” the boy said, standing up.
“Conrad,” she answered back.
She made her way towards him and threw her arms around his neck.
“But what are you doing here?” Conrad asked. “Were you caught?”
“No, we’re your rescue party,” Ruby answered.
Standing next to each other, the two thirteen year olds bore a striking resemblance of the other. They both had the same dirty blonde head of hair and bright green eyes. There was no mistaking that this was Ruby’s twin brother.
“Let’s go,” Hazel said.
“I can’t leave here,” Conrad said.
“Why not?” Ruby asked, taking a step back.
“Because these bracelets don’t only stop our powers, they stop us from leaving. The people who run the camp put an invisible barrier up around it to keep us in. They didn’t want anyone to escape like what happened at the girl’s camp,” he said.
“Oh,” Ruby said, deflated.
“We’ll work out a way to get them off,” Alice said reassuringly.
They walked outside the dorm to find a small group of people looking down at one of the sleeping guards with confused looks on their faces.
“What happened to him?” Conrad asked, looking around.
The girls exchanged glances.
“Did you do that? Is he dead?” Conrad questioned.
“Yes, we did do that, but he isn’t dead. All the guards will be asleep for the next couple of hours,” Melanie explained.
“Nice work,” Conrad complimented.
He looked at Ruby, “You certainly chose a good team to get me out. They seem to know what they’re doing.”
Aimee, Melanie, Alice and Hazel smiled and exchanged amused glances.
“Can I have a look at that bracelet?” Hazel said.
“Sure,” Conrad said extending his arm towards her.
A small bracelet of silver metal twisted itself around Conrad’s small wrist.
“It’s made of titanium,” Hazel said. “An impenetrable metal. It’s locked around his wrist. I don’t know if we’ll be able to get it off. We’d need to activate the lock so it will release.”
