Chapter 20: Resurrection
Blackness.
Nothing but blackness.
Then light.
Bright light.

Alice awoke and opened her eyes. Bright light flooded into her consciousness. Slowly she became aware of her surroundings. White ceiling, white walls.
The first thing that came to her mind was the camp, the area she had been in after they had caught her the first time, where they had put in the disk.
Her hand flicked to the scar on her arm. Pain seared through her body making her gasp.
She remembered fighting the dogs and getting bitten. That must be the source of the pain.
What had happened after that?
Had she blacked out? Hadn’t she been in the forest? Had she been caught? Where were the others?
Panic set in, her heart started beating faster.
Alice tried to sit up. Agony spread through her body again.
She heard someone come in.
She turned her head to see a nurse.
“Oh good, you’re awake,” the nurse said.
Alice tried to sit up again. She felt helpless, lying on her back.
“Stay still,” the nurse said. She came closer and pushed a button on the bed.
Alice felt her upper body rise until she was slightly elevated.
She found that she could now see the room properly without hurting herself.
“Isn’t that better?” the nurse said smiling.
“Yes, thank you,” Alice replied.
Alice could now see the rest of her body.
A drip had been put into her hand and she had been changed into hospital clothes.
“Where am I?” she asked.
“Toulon hospital,” the nurse answered.
Alice relaxed. She wasn’t at a camp, she was in a hospital. But how had she gotten here?
“Where are my friends?” Alice asked. “I need to find them.”
She felt frustrated. She wasn’t in any state to leave the bed and find them.
“Two girls came in with you earlier today. One about your age who had blonde hair and the other was a bit older with brown hair. Is that who you mean?” the nurse said.
Ruby and Hazel, her friends were here.
This information cheered Alice up considerably. Her friends had gone back and found her and taken her to a hospital, even though hospitals were risky.
“Can I see them?” Alice asked.
“I’ll have to check with the doctor but since you’re awake and talking, I don’t see why not,” the nurse said walking out.
Alice was left alone for only a minute before a male doctor walked in.
“How are you feeling?” he asked. “I see you’re awake.”
“What happened?” Alice asked.
“When you came in, you were unconscious. You also had a large wound in your side. You had lost a lot of blood and you’re lucky to be alive. I don’t know how you survived because from what your friends said they carried you through the forest for a couple of days. Normally someone wouldn’t last that long without help. We had to put stitches in your side. You will come out of this with a nice scar to be sure,” he said smiling.
