Chapter 23: Following Mercedi

The fight went on, but from the start the guards didn’t have a chance against five powerful super humans.

Eventually the teenagers managed to get all the remaining guards (the ones that weren’t yet injured or knocked out) to their knees in surrender.

Melanie looked around, noting with relief that none of the guards lying on the ground were dead.

“It’ll be a few minutes before re-enforcements arrive, that is, if there are any,” Conrad said, when no more guards came around the corner.

Melanie, Alice, Ruby and Conrad stood together in the middle of the corridor.

“Aimee?” Melanie called, when the fifth member of their team failed to come back into sight.

“Aimee?” she called again. “You still here?”

No answer.

Aimee had disappeared and Melanie realised that someone else had disappeared also. Mercedi.

Aimee walked quietly down the pristine corridors.

She had noticed Mercedi slipping away from the fight and had followed him.

She walked behind him, not making a sound. A skill that she had learned from years of practice.

The person you were following may not be able to see you but they could definitely hear you.

Mercedi stopped in front of a door and tapped a security code into a key pad causing the door to swing open. He walked through.

The door closed behind him almost immediately, she didn’t have enough time to slip in behind him.

But then, when had a door ever stopped Aimee?

Footsteps behind Aimee caused her to turn.

She saw a teenager walk slowly round the corner, before two more teenagers followed. They almost walked straight past her when she materialised in front of them.

The girl leading the group stopped abruptly in shock, but then the expression on her face turned into a smile.

“Aimee,” Melanie said, with relief. “You really shouldn’t do that. Anyway, where did you disappear to? We’ve been looking for you.”

“I followed Mercedi. He went through that door…” Aimee said. She stopped and looked around.

“Where’s Ruby?” she asked, noticing that the thirteen year old was missing.

“She’s watching the guards,” Alice said. “She was quite insistent that she was able to do it. One look at her hands lit up in flame and I’m sure the guards will behave themselves.”

The group fell silent.

“What are we waiting for?” Melanie asked no-one in particular.

Aimee faded out again and walked through the wall.

She looked around the room on the other side of the door. It looked more like a cell than anything else.

She remembered what she was doing there and opened the door for the others.

They all walked in.

The door snapped closed behind them.

“And so the heroes continue their quest…” The voice came from somewhere in the room.

“Mercedi,” Melanie said through gritted teeth.

“You know that’s exactly how your friend greeted me…right before she died,” Mercedi’s voice answered back.

“Where are you?” Conrad shouted, “Come out and face us like a man!”

“That is tempting but I prefer not to get hurt.”

“Coward!”

“Call me what you like, but I will beat you in the end.”

“Where did you go?” Aimee asked.

“You didn’t think I would let you follow me, did you, invisible girl? You know I’m paranormal too, someone quite like your friend actually,” Mercedi said.

“A telepath,” Melanie whispered.

“Got it in one,” Mercedi’s voice said. It bounced off the walls, disorientating the group.

“Do you know what I can really do though? My full extent?” Mercedi challenged. No one answered.

“I didn’t think so.” He paused. “Hazel knew. But I had to get rid of her.”

“If you’re paranormal, why are you targeting people like yourself?” Alice asked.

“That’s easy,” Conrad said, before Mercedi could answer. “He’s in it for the power. If he gets rid of all the paranormals, no one will be able to stop him.”

“You’re smart,” Mercedi said. “I’m sad I have to kill you.”

He laughed an evil laugh that made the teenagers listening shiver.

A sudden pain hit the four teenagers in the side of their heads, pushing them to their knees.

Hazel lay on the metal bench, still and unmoving.

Her hands twitched.

Her eyes flicked open.
