After the talent show and everyone had left Naruto walked home by himself, he had insisted he'd be alright. As he walked to his home, he thought of everything that had happened with Sasuke. From their first encounter to today. His chest filled with anger when he remembered what Sasuke had told him on his first day of school. It angered Naruto that Sasuke didn't want to be his friend. Then he remembered all the laughing they had done when the teacher had a nosebleed because someone's mom was 'smoking'. He smiled at the memories of Sasuke and him picking on each other only because everyone else was talking about the project and they hadn't known what to do.
The thoughts of Sasuke had changed the anger in Naruto's heart to something he only shared with Miss Tsunade, Shizune, and Iruka. He didn't know if it was the same kind of feeling though. The kiss that Sasuke had given him made him want more. Naruto's face burned as he thought of the Sasuke now. How his eyes always seemed to stare into his own with such passion. Or the way he grew into his head, sure it was strange that Sasuke had a big head as a kid, but it was adorable.
Sasuke had also grown taller which made Naruto feel small sometimes. The way Sasuke glared at the sun for being too bright, but was alright with Naruto's bright hair and smile. Naruto liked the way Sasuke smiled when it was just the two of them alone. He liked the way Sasuke smelled, the way Sasuke was always there ready to pick on whoever was picking on Naruto even though it ended with Sasuke picking on Naruto.
Without realizing it Naruto had stopped in front of Sasuke's house. The lights were on. It was dark out already. The moon had risen just a bit, there were specs of clouds slowly drifting. The air was warm since summer was around the corner. There were a few cars driving their way to their rightful homes. Naruto took a deep breath and looked at the stairs in front of the house. They were made of stones just like the other houses. He looked up at the light that was still on and knew it was Sasuke's room from the time he was in there.
With an aching heart that was running miles Naruto climbed the stairs. He could hear his heart in his ears, he felt himself swallow, could feel the sweat on his hands. His mind was running with so many possibilities as he raised his hand to knock. Taking one last breath Naruto let his hand bounce off the wood.
It took a few minutes before he heard rushed footsteps coming from behind the door. He pictured Sasuke running down the stairs and laughed quietly. The door opened and there stood the teen of all his problems, well most of them. Sasuke looked as if he just worked out. He had no shirt on and wore shorts. His face was flushed and he was breathing heavy with a bit of sweat on his forehead.
"Naruto." Sasuke said sounding more shocked than he looked.
"Can we talk?" Naruto asked shyly.
"I..right now isn't a gr-" Sasuke was cut off by someone wearing his shirt.
It was a boy a little smaller than Naruto with eyes as blue as pool water and blonde hair that was slowly fading to a brown as though it had been dyed. Naruto looked at the teen then back at Sasuke and knew. His heart sank to the ground, and it was hard to pick it back up. Naruto licked his lips and tried to say something, but he shut his mouth and ran home. He heard Sasuke calling out to him, but he ignored him. Naruto couldn't see through his tears as they came faster and faster. He burst through the doors scaring his parents and made his way upstairs. Naruto slammed his bedroom door shut and locked the door.
He couldn't believe it. After everything that had happened between the two Sasuke still chose someone else. He probably didn't even like Naruto as the blonde liked him. Naruto brushed his arms across his desk brushing everything off it. He tore at the posters he had put up. He kicked at the dirty laundry on the floor and fell to the floor beside his bed. He hugged his legs to his chest and cried. He screamed and tore at his hair. He didn't know what he was thinking. Sasuke couldn't stand him so why would he like him.
Naruto shouldn't have felt this way in the beginning. He knew that. Sasuke was too good for him. Naruto thought of himself as trash, something no one wanted. He began rocking back and forth as his dark thoughts took over his mind. He cried into his knees and wished he had gone with Miss Tsunade the night of his birthday. He wanted to leave the world that hurt him so much behind. He wanted to not feel the way he was feeling now. He compared himself to useless things that should just disappear.
There was a knock from the door, but Naruto ignored it. He continued to curl himself into a ball. At this point he was breathing hard; his throat was horse and his eyes burned. His hands shook if he didn't hold onto his arms. His chest felt as if someone had used a cookie cutter into his chest and took his heart as it passed through. There was snot running from his nose and into his mouth, but he didn't care.
The knocking stopped and the door clicked opened. Kakashi stepped in with Iruka who ran straight to the boy. Kakashi sighed and tapped Iruka's shoulder to move a bit. Kakashi picked Naruto up with ease and set the boy on the bed. He uncurled the boy and pulled the covers over the aching body.
"Iruka, could you give us a moment?" Kakashi asked.
Iruka smiled sadly since this was something he hadn't expected of his fiancé. Iruka left quietly deciding it was best to make Naruto's favorite cookie. Kakashi sat at the foot of the bed and took out his small book. He didn't say anything as Naruto calmed down. The room was a mess, but Kakashi didn't mind. Naruto had stopped crying and was now sleepy and sniffing away his runny nose. Kakashi put his book down and looked over the room.
"It's not going to get easier." He said and picked up a small fox plush that had seen better days.
"What?" Naruto asked sitting up and rubbing his sore eyes.
"Whatever is going on in your heart. This maybe the first time it's happened, right?" Kakashi asked handing the plush to Naruto.
The blonde nodded and hugged the plush. Kakashi nodded and looked back at his book. It was quiet, they could hear Iruka making another mess in the kitchen.
"It's called love. What you felt for whoever broke your heart. It's the same way I feel for Iruka. Trust me, it takes more than one time to find the right person. If this person is meant to be yours it'll happen. If they're not, it's alright too. Life isn't going to end if they're not in yours. I'll tell ya a story. When I was sixteen, I fell in love with someone who didn't like me back. We ended up dating for a bit, but it didn't last very long. She told me she loved my best friend more. I stopped being friends with them...they died on their first date. Car accident." Kakashi chuckled drily.
"This isn't helping..." Naruto sighed as he wiped his nose on his blanket.
"Right, what I'm trying to say is that you're still young. You've got your whole life to find who you want to spend the rest of your life with. Don't rush it, just let life be." Kakashi smiled.
Naruto didn't say anything and just looked at the white-haired man. Kakashi swallowed hard thinking of the people who had hurt him. Naruto hugged the plush tighter as he thought of Sasuke. The tears came back again.
"Who was it?" Kakashi asked looking at Naruto for the first time since he came in.
"I don't want to say." Naruto said a bit embarrassed.
"It's alright. I'm sure Sasuke would soon realize what he did." Kakashi smirked knowing very well.
