To some people, it might have been just another Friday evening. But to Jongho, it was a nerve-wracking evening. He had been constantly anxious and mumbled words of prayers hoping nothing would go south.
He was sitting behind a dark glass panel of a newly opened restaurant. He had a clear view of Soyi who entered a couple minutes ago. She looked stunning, he thought. She had on a simple black dress with ribbon-like strap that tied into a delicate bows on her shoulder. The warm glow of the restaurant lighting reflected against her honey skin making her look practically glowing.
A staff had led her to a table by the floor-to-ceiling glass window, overlooking restaurant garden which looked whimsical with the twinkling of fairy lights. A table she was unaware to have been intentionally selected for her. She was offered a glass of water and handed the menu.
It was unfortunate that she was sitting with her side toward him, but it was perfect for what was planned. Jongho saw her telling the staff something before the staff came to Jongho's direction by the staff counter.
"She said she is waiting for her friends. Should I proceed?" a knowing smile was present on their face.
Jongho could only nod, too afraid he would speak unnecessarily loud. Jongho the immediately unlocked his phone and made a call.
"Noona, yeah. She's just arrived" he told the other side.
Satisfied with the answer he was getting, he hung up. He shifted back to look at Soyi. Still a sight to behold.
The charm on her earring sparkled beautifully as she swept her hair and pushed it back. The beat of his heart drummed through his ears as he watched her pick up a call.
A few minutes felt like forever to those waiting. That's how Jongho felt.
A waiter proceeded to bring Soyi a glass of water with the menu, along with a fresh long-stemmed white rose. The look of confusion on her face was endearing and he couldn't help but adore her deeper.
Upon being in a close distance with Jongho, the waiter whispered with a giggle.
"She asked where it's from and I told her I didn't know and was just doing what I am told."
Jongho mouthed a thank you and glanced at her direction as he tidied himself.
When he stepped out of that glass panel, all the nervousness disappeared.
Just across that dining hall, sat the girl whom he wished to see smiling happy, always. Confidence grew stronger with each step as he closed the distance between them.
"As lovely as it is to see a beautiful rose, may I offer it some companions?" Jongho softly said causing Soyi to swiftly look toward his direction.
"Hey, what are you doing here?" she looked at him up and down as if unsure of her sight.
"I am here for you, noona. So, will you accept these?" Jongho put his hand out holding a bouquet of white roses. Just like the single rose sent to her earlier.
Puzzled. That was clear on the girl's face as she tentatively reached for the bouquet.
Jongho carefully moved around her and reached for her chair, signaling her to sit down. Soyi sat down and looked up to him with those sparkling eyes with so many unspoken questions.
Jongho's eyes caught the sight of the plum coloured lips of hers and it took all his determination to not just bend down and place his own against those tempting pair.
He took the seat next to her. All those time, his gaze never leaving her.
"Noona, you are very special to me. From the moment I saw you, I knew you're gorgeous. Each day we spent together prove me that you're an even more amazing person." Jongho held out his hands on the table and Soyi understood the unspoken words.
She gently placed her own in his hands, a shy smile curving on her lips.
"I want to be with you, noona. I want to be your 6 in the morning and later at night and show you the beautiful world you have made me see." Jongho gave her hands ever so slight squeeze.
"Jongho, are you sure-"
"I know, noona. I am willing to wait if you want me to. But if you are holding back for that reason, please don't. I will show you what you deserve, and it's so much more" he let go of her hands ever so slowly.
Jongho tried to steady his breath as he reached into his jacket pocket to reveal a small box. He opened the box and a dainty necklace with a crescent moon pendant, adorned with a sparkling crystal on one end sat beautifully inside.
"Soyi noona, will you give me the honour of starting a new beginning with you?" the boy ask with voice so sincere it could warm the coldest of hearts.
With tears threatening to fall, Soyi nodded.
"Yes" her answer was barely audible, but Jongho saw it in her eyes before words even came out of those lips.
Trying to stay calm and collected was harder than he thought. Jongho had taken the necklace out of the box and he walked over behind Soyi to put it on her.
Hands trembling upon the contact, he fumbled for a while before finally securing it in place. Soyi's fingers tentatively reached for the pendant.
"I love it. It is beautiful" she said smiling at the boy as he returned to his seat.
"You are beautiful" he clarified.
The rest of the evening went wonderfully. Throughout dinner, they had talked about how the night was planned.
Soyi kept whining how she had been so clueless about the whole ordeal and sincerely thought she would be on a girl's night out with her best friends.
When the dinner had ended, they walked out of the restaurant hand in hand. With the twinkling stars on the summer night sky above them, a prayer was whispered.
Dear universe, here's us on our first step. Please be kind.
