"I signed up for training!" My grandmother gasped, then her hand went across my face, leaving a hot sting on my cheek. A cool tear ran down my hot flesh, "I'm sorry." I looked up at my grandmother to find her sobbing into her hands, lowering herself on a chair in the dining room. I turned away from her, I couldn't see her like this, I wasn't doing this to hurt her, I just had to do something I couldn't just let him get away with this. He left us with no money, he took it all I wasn't about to let my grandmother suffer because we couldn't afford a doctor or medicine. My grandmother coughed, softly at first then it grew more aggressive, I turned around swiftly, her face was red and sweaty, I walked swiftly to the cupboard, retrieving a cup then to the sink, pumping the water into the cup hurriedly. The water poured over the edges of the cup, I was shaking, but not because the water was cold. I handed her the drink as she continued to cough. She sipped lightly at first, each sip calming her rough cough.
"Why? How could you do this to me? After your brother-." She held her tongue, but she didn't have to finish her sentence for me to know what she was going to say.
"After my 'brother' left us." I clenched my fists, "I need to do this, I know I can, I'll become an MP and find him." She shook her head.
The path to revenge is a path painted scarlet for all who follow it."
"Then I'll be getting my hands dirty, won't I?" I stared at my feet " He bought us this crap house, thinking it would be enough to shut us up and not ask for our money." I shook my head. "My training starts tomorrow, I'm going to bed, Goodnight." I leaned forward to kiss her on the cheek when she moved her face away from me. I pulled back, then walked swiftly to my room, I slammed the door behind me, throwing my face into my pillow, and letting my emotions flood in. I wasn't even of age to register for training, but we couldn't wait any longer, the small home we had wasn't enough, we couldn't afford medicine for my sick and possibly dying Grandmother, the latter thought made my sobs increase, she was all I had left, why in the hell did he leave?!
I ran to the kitchen grabbing an apple off of the counter, then rushed out the door with my backpack slung over my shoulder.
"Sorry I didn't wake you dear."
"Grams." I halted my jog, watching her weed out her small garden.
"Three years is a long time to be away from home-."
"I'll be back before you know it, Grams, I promise, we'll get a better house, you'll have a bigger garden-."
"Do you think I need those things?!" My grandmother raised her voice, a very rare occurrence, she turned her gaze down toward her hands, ashamed of her uncontrolled emotions. "I don't need anything but my granddaughter!"Her shoulders shook slightly as she kept her head lowered. I walked to her, lowered myself on one knee, and placed my hand on her shoulder. She reached out swiftly, taking me into her arms, and holding me tighter than I thought she was capable of. I returned her embrace, squeezing her as much as I dared. I pulled away, I'll be back before you know it." I smiled, moving a lock of gray hair out of her face."
"Quinn?" I turned around to find Jamie.
"Give me a minute." I turned back to my grandmother, kissing her on her forehead and giving her a final squeeze. "I will come back for you, I swear."
...
We ran swiftly down the streets, turning corners swiftly and dodging people left and right.
"What did your grandma say?" Jamie huffed as we came to a stop.
"She's not happy with me leaving, but I think she understands." Jamie nodded pulling her long almond hair to the side.
