Part V – Captain America: The Winter Soldier

Earth, 2014

"Happy birthday to you, Liv!" MJ wishes me as Peter and Ned do the same.

I thank them and they hug me.

"Now, we got you gifts!" exclaims Ned, giving me a package.

I take it shyly. Nobody has ever given me gifts for my birthday except for Uncle Steve who gave me a beautiful gold bracelet with tiny green gemstones, knowing that green was my father's color, and Tony Stark who offered me a brand-new smartphone. I open Ned's gift to find a book I really wanted to read.

"Thank you so much, Ned!"

"My turn!" MJ exclaims.

She hands me a small bag with a few clothes in it.

"It's beautiful, thank you so much!"

"Happy sixteenth birthday!" says Peter, handing me another gift.

I unwrap it to find tickets to a concert for an artist we both like.

"Thank you, guys, so much, this means a lot to me!"

After my father died, MJ noticed that I was feeling sad and stressed, so she forced me to join the school decathlon team and introduced me to Peter and Ned. We've all been hanging out a lot recently. At first, I wasn't sure about hanging out with them because my powers aren't fully under control, but Uncle Steve insisted. He believes that having to conceal my new powers will help me control them. We narrowed it down to two new powers: telekinesis and energy control. I'm easily able to conceal the second one, as I need to be submerged by emotions to make things explode. However, the first one is a real problem. The smallest things, such as being startled, make me accidentally move objects with my mind, but Uncle Steve was right, the more I am hanging out with my new friends, the less incidents I have with my powers.

Ned brings me back to reality when he makes confetti explode, startling me. The door of MJ's room slams shut.

"Woah! What was that?" Peter asks.

"I don't know, I guess my room is haunted," MJ shrugs casually. "We should play Ouija next time we hang out here!"

"Awesome! I have one at home, I can bring it tomorrow after school for movie night!" exclaims Ned.

"I'm not sure playing Ouija is a great idea," Peter says uncertainly.

"Why would we need a Ouija board to get in touch with spirits? We just need to ask nicely," I say, before adding, "watch and learn."

I get up and say loud and clear:

"Spirits, are you there? May you be kind enough to show your presence to us?"

As I say this, I move a piece of wrapping paper on the ground with my mind, startling Peter and Ned, as MJ says:

"Girl, I'm still sleeping here tonight, please don't scare me like this!"

"Can movie night be at my place tomorrow instead?" Peter adds.

I laugh and agree, while Ned says:

"Well, about tomorrow, I have detention, so I won't be able to make it."

"And I'm going to sketch Ned's crisis while he's there, so I'm out too," MJ adds.

Peter turns to me:

"So, I guess that leaves us, are you in?"

"Sure! I'll see you tomorrow," I smile.

In the last few months that I have known Peter, I have always found him to be very sweet, smart and funny. However, I haven't spent much time alone with him, which is why I am a tad nervous about being alone with him for movie night. And I have to admit, he's quite handsome.

The next day, after school, I say bye to MJ and Ned before heading back to Peter's place with him.

"May! We're here!" he says, as we get in.

"Hi! Oh, Liv, it's good to see you again!" she greets me.

I say hi to May and we head to Peter's room, as May says:

"Leave the door open!"

We both laugh but also blush slightly.

"You know what I just realized?" Peter begins, "we've never been to your place."

I panic, what am I supposed to tell him? That I live in a different state and teleport to school every morning? I reply with the first thing that pops to my mind:

"I live with my uncle, and he works for the government, so he has a lot of classified information in his office. He doesn't want me to have people over."

He nods understandingly, and we keep talking as he plays the movie. I feel really comfortable with Peter, and out of all the people I have met on Earth so far, he is the first one I could see myself trusting with my secret. I don't know why, though. Our phones vibrate at the same time and we both look at them to see that MJ sent us a snapchat. I don't understand what mortals find appealing in social media, but Steve said it looked suspicious if I wasn't on any of them. I told him he wasn't on any either, but he said he was allowed to, because he was old. Peter opens the video MJ sent and chuckles. I can see it's a video from a recording they showed in detention, and she wrote "here we go again." I open the video on my phone, and burst out laughing when I see Uncle Steve in his Captain America uniform, sitting seriously on a chair, saying:

"So, you got detention. You screwed up; you know what you did was wrong. The question is, how are you gonna make things right? Maybe you were trying to be cool but take it from a guy who's been frozen for 65 years, the only way to really be cool, is to follow the rules."

I can't stop laughing, why did Steve never show me this.

"Uh... Liv? Is it the first time you're seeing that video?"

"Yes, it's so funny, I can't believe he never showed me this before," I reply, before I can realize what I'm saying.

He stares at me, confused:

"What?"

Oh well, screw it, I'm just gonna tell him. I really feel like I can trust him, and my intuition is rarely wrong.

"Can you keep a secret?" I ask, seriously.

He nods:

"Of course, I promise."

"Okay, well," I point to the video, showing Steve, "that's my uncle."

"Really, how can Captain America be your uncle?"

"It's complicated, but long story short, he adopted me."

He asks me a couple more questions and even makes me call Steve on speaker phone to prove I'm not kidding. It's like a weight has been lifted off my shoulders, it just feels so good to finally be able to tell someone something about me.
