Chapter 35

Earth, 2023

After we won, everyone took the next few days to recover from the fight. Steve explained to me everything that happened these past few years and how they pulled off a time heist to go get the Stones in the past. I spent most of my time with Peter, as Tony's death terribly affected him. Once a week had gone by since Thanos, Steve held a proper funeral for Natasha. We all gathered together, as Steve, Clint and Banner said a few words. I really hope she knows we won; I hope she knows she didn't die for nothing. At least, when Tony sacrificed his life, he knew for sure that it would not be in vain. We also wanted to do something to honor Vision, but Wanda said she would take care of it, so we didn't insist. We are now at Tony's funeral, and it broke my heart to learn that during these past five years, he had built a family and now had a daughter. Tony had previously recorded a hologram of him talking, which we watched before heading outside. I'm now standing in between Peter and Uncle Steve, holding both of their hands, as we all watch his arc reactor drift away on the water. After a while, one by one, people slowly begin to leave, and eventually, Peter asks us to be alone for a little while, and I walk up to Thor.

"How are you feeling, munchkin?" he asks, before adding, "I have been meaning to ask you something."

"I'll be fine, what did you want to ask me?"

"I'm leaving with the Asgardians of the Galaxy, and I was wondering if you wanted to join us," he offers.

I look back at Peter, who is looking devastated, before glancing at Uncle Steve.

"No, I'm sorry Uncle Thor, I'd rather stay here. My life is here now."

Peter needs me now, and even if he didn't, I could never leave him. And I don't think I could leave Uncle Steve either. Uncle Thor nods understandingly, before replying:

"Well, if you need anything, I'll only be a few planets away, and don't forget, you'll always be welcomed to New Asgard. I'm planning on making the Valkyrie the new ruler."

I hug him tightly and watch him leave before heading back to Peter. I take his hand and stand silently beside him.

"Thank you for all you did in the last few days. I'm sorry. You lost Mr. Stark too. And now Thor just left you," he says, hugging me.

"Don't worry about me, I'm not alone. I still have you and my Uncle Steve," I whisper, burying my face in his neck.

A few days later, Bruce was finally able to rebuild the quantum tunnel, and Steve said he would take care of bringing back all the Stones to the exact moment and place they were taken. I'm standing next to Bucky, with Peter holding my hand, as Steve is getting ready for his mission. He talks with Bruce for a few seconds before heading to Sam, talking with him as well. He then comes to us, telling Bucky:

"Don't do anything stupid 'till I get get."

Bucky chuckles:

"How can I? You're taking all the stupid with you."

They hug and Steve then turns to me:

"I never thanked you for coming into my life," he begins, "you have no idea how much you mean to me. You're not just like my niece anymore, you're like my daughter. No matter what, I'll always be your Uncle Steve. And always remember, I love you, Liv."

I hug him tightly, answering:

"I love you too, Uncle Steve, and thank you for everything you've done for me. You gave me a home when no one else did."

He turns to Peter:

"Take care of my daughter until I get back, will you?"

"Yes, sir. Steve. Captain," Peter replies, blushing.

I smile at how adorable he is as Steve heads onto the platform. Bucky adds:

"Gonna miss you, buddy."

"It's gonna be okay, Buck."

I'm starting to wonder why Bucky is acting as if Uncle Steve is never coming back. He's only leaving for five seconds. Steve grabs Mjolnir and Bruce wires the machine.

"You ready, Cap?" he asks, "all right, we'll meet you back here, okay?"

"You bet," Steve replies, putting his helmet on.

"Going quantum. Three... Two... One," Bruce says, as Steve disappears.

"Are you nervous?" Peter whispers in my ear.

"No, he always comes back, plus this time, it's only going to last five seconds," I reply.

However, five seconds later, Uncle Steve isn't back, and Bucky leans towards me, saying:

"Looks like it's just you and I 'till the end of the line now, doll."

I give him a confused look, as Bruce and Sam start panicking.

"Sam," Bucky says, looking in the distance.

I look in the same direction he's looking, and see an old man sitting on a bench. This can't be. He would never do that without having told me first. Tears start rolling down my cheeks as Sam asks me:

"You wanna go see him first?"

I shake my head, refusing to believe this is happening, as Peter hugs me from behind.

"Go ahead," Bucky tells Sam, as he puts his hand on my shoulder.

By this point, I'm sobbing uncontrollably in Peter's arms. How could he do this to me, right after telling me that he was coming back? I watch Sam talk with who I can only guess is Uncle Steve for a few minutes before Bucky tells me:

"You know, doll, when Sam is done, you should really go talk to him. You'll regret it if you don't."

"He's right, love," Peter agrees.

I see Steve give his shield to Sam, before he walks back to us, so I slowly walk up to my uncle. I sit next to him on the bench, waiting for him to talk first.

"I'm sorry," he begins, "it wasn't my plan, at first."

"Did you at least get your dance with Peggy?" I ask in a small voice.

He nods, chuckling, so I add:

"And did you live a happy life?"

"I did. And I thought about you every day," he replies, taking out his pocket watch, handing it to me.

I open it to see that a picture of Steve and I has replaced the picture he had of Peggy. I let out a tear, kiss him on the cheek, and say:

"Don't worry about me, I'll be fine."

I get up and walk back to Peter, who takes me into his arms and says before kissing me:

"Don't worry, love. No matter what happens, we'll get through it together."
